3D TVs in 2026: Are They Still Made, and What to Buy Instead
How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 56 listed at the end.
Short answer
No: as of October 2026 no major brand makes a 3D TV. You can still buy one used, or as old stock that one US importer lists as new.

Watching a 3D TV at home meant a pair of 3D glasses for every viewer; the pairs drawn here are the battery-powered active kind. Illustration made with AI (OpenAI GPT Image 2.5), not a photograph.
Key takeaways
- Vizio stopped after 2013, Samsung after 2015, LG and Sony after 2016; see when each brand stopped.
- The "new" 3D TVs in Google's results are old stock from one US importer: the newest model we could date is from 2015, and the store gives no refunds on working sets. See where to buy one.
- To tell whether a TV has 3D, look up the full model number on its back label; see the four checks and each brand's last 3D models.
- A newer route needs no 3D TV: an Owl3D Shift converts any 2D film playing on your computer to 3D instantly, as it plays, from a disc, a file or a streaming site in a browser. It is an AI conversion, not the studio's 3D version; see 2D films in 3D, instantly.

Can you still buy a 3D TV?
Yes, but not a current model from a major brand. As of October 7, 2026 there are three places to look.
| Where | What you find | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| A big US retailer (we checked Best Buy) | No 3D TVs [27] | "3D" category labels |
| A specialist importer (220 Electronics) | Old 3D models, the newest from 2015, listed as new | Export versions; the store's own terms |
| The used market | Sets made from 2010 to 2016 | Test the set first |
Last checked : what each place listed.
A "3D" category label proves nothing: Best Buy's "Active 3D TV" page listed ordinary TVs, a projector and a pair of 3D glasses [27]. Check the model number.
For a used set, try marketplaces such as eBay, or local listings where you can test the set first, and run the used-TV checks.
What are the "new" 3D TVs in Google's results?
The ones we traced are old models from one store. Search for "3D TV" and Google's product boxes show sets marked new; the listings we traced lead to 220 Electronics, a retailer near Chicago that sells 220-volt, "multi-system" electronics to people who live or move abroad [44][45].
On October 7, 2026 its catalog held 107 TV listings with 3D in the name [46]. The newest model we could date is from 2015, and most are export versions [7][45][46][52]. They are not bargains: every 55-inch Samsung 3D listing with a price cost more than the newer 55-inch Samsung 4K sets in the same catalog [46].
The 107 listings in detail: brands, stock, model years, tuners and glasses
| Brand | 3D TV listings |
|---|---|
| Samsung | 67 |
| Sony | 16 |
| LG | 13 |
| Sharp | 6 |
| Toshiba | 5 |
Of the 107 listings, 74 could be ordered and 33 were marked out of stock [46].
What the listings are:
- Old models. The newest we could date is Samsung's JS9000, from its 2015 Nano Crystal line [7][46][52]; one listing calls itself a "New 2011/12 Model" [45].
- Listed as new. The pages we opened give the condition as new in the data Google reads [45].
- Stock unclear. The store says its prices are "updated in real-time from our suppliers" [47], and we could not tell from the pages whether a given set is sitting in its warehouse.
- Mostly export versions. Samsung model numbers in the catalog start with UA, where Samsung's US spec sheets use UN [7][46].
- European tuners. About half the listings name DVB tuners, the broadcast system developed in Europe, while US over-the-air TV uses ATSC [46][48]. A Blu-ray player on HDMI is unaffected, but the built-in tuner may not receive US channels.
- Glasses. Some listings include 3D glasses; the Sony KDL40EX720 listing says "3D Active Glasses required, sold separately" [46].

Which TVs had 3D, and when each brand stopped
Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Sharp and Panasonic all made 3D TVs, and 3D left their lineups between 2013 and 2017. The first table gives each brand's last model year with 3D, the second its last models.
| Brand | Last model year with 3D | What happened next |
|---|---|---|
| Vizio | 2013 | No 3D in its 2014 lineup [1][5] |
| Sharp | 2014, the last we could confirm | No 3D TVs announced at CES 2017 [1] |
| Samsung | 2015 | No 2016 model had 3D [3][4][52] |
| LG | 2016 | No 3D in the 2017 range [1] |
| Sony | 2016 | No 3D in the 2017 range [1] |
| Panasonic | 2017, in Europe | No Panasonic 3D series found after that |
The last 3D models from each brand
These are the last models with 3D that we could confirm for each brand, with the 3D type and the glasses that came in the box. Active sets need battery-powered glasses and passive sets use simple polarized ones; how the two types work is further down.
| Brand | Last 3D models we could confirm | 3D type | Glasses in the box |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vizio | M-Series, such as the 55-inch M551d-A2R [6] | Passive [6] | Four pairs [6] |
| Sharp | Aquos Quattron+ SQ15 (60, 70 inches) and UQ17 (60, 70, 80 inches), sold as "3D ready" [18] | Not confirmed | Not confirmed |
| Samsung | SUHD JS9500 (65, 78, 88 inches) and JS8500 (48, 55, 65 inches); JU7100 (40 to 85 inches) [7][8][9] | Active | One pair of SSG-5150GB with the JS sets; optional on the JU7100 [7][8][9] |
| LG | OLED G6, E6 and the curved C6; Super UHD UH9500 (65, 86 inches) [10][11][12][13] | Passive | Two pairs with the G6, E6 and UH9500 [10][11][12] |
| Sony | Z9D series (65, 75, 100 inches) [51] | Active for the 65-inch, per a third-party spec database [15] | Not confirmed |
| Panasonic | EXW784 series (50, 58, 65, 75 inches), sold in Germany [16] | Not stated in our source | Not stated in our source |
Notes on the table: other brands, LG's B6, Sony's glasses and KDL models, and what we could not confirm
Vizio's change was reported from CES on January 6, 2014 [1][5]. Panasonic left the US TV market in 2016 [17]. Philips said its 2016 TVs would not use 3D [4]. TCL and Hisense, like Sharp, announced no 3D TVs at CES 2017 [1].
- LG. The flat B6 had no 3D [13].
- Sony glasses. Sony's own Help Guides for its TVs of these years name active glasses (TDG-BT500A) and passive glasses (TDG-500P), depending on the model [49][50].
- Sony KDL models. Several Sony series with KDL model numbers had 3D: the importer's catalog described above lists KDL-EX720, NX720, HX750, HX925, R550 and W800B sets [46].
- Sony's PlayStation 3D Display was a separate product: a 24-inch active-shutter set launched in 2011 [26].
What we could not confirm:
- Sony's 100-inch Z9D. Whether it had 3D.
- Other Sony models. Sony's Help Guide for the KDL-W800C, KDL-W850C, XBR-X930D and XBR-X940D has a section marked "3D models only", without saying which of the four those are [50][51].
- Sharp and Panasonic. The 3D type and glasses of the models in the table above.
How to tell if a TV is 3D capable
"3D ready", "3D capable" and "3D enabled" all mean the set can display 3D. They do not mean glasses come with it: Samsung's 2015 JU7100 was sold as "3D Experience with Optional Active Glasses" [9]. Four checks settle it.
- Look up the full model number. It is on the label on the back; read the maker's spec sheet for that number. Samsung's 3D sets read "3D Experience with Active Glasses" [7], and LG's have a 3D line reading "FPR (Passive)" with a count of the glasses included [10].
- Look for a 3D menu. Sony's guide for its Android TVs says "3D models have [3D settings] in [Settings] — [Display & Sound]" [49]. Samsung's 3D sets have a 3D menu with options such as 3D Mode, Depth and 3D Auto View [54].
- Check the glasses. Active glasses have a power button and a battery, and Sony's must be registered to the TV before first use. Passive glasses work as soon as you put them on [23][49].
- Play a 3D picture. Play a 3D Blu-ray over HDMI with the glasses on; a Sony 3D set, for example, shows the message "3D signal has been detected" [49]. A TV that only powers on tells you nothing about its 3D mode.
The full model number matters because brands sold 3D and non-3D versions side by side, as LG did with the C6 and B6 [13].
Is a used 3D TV worth buying?
For one kind of buyer, yes: someone who owns or collects 3D Blu-ray discs and wants several people to watch on one screen. It is not worth it if you hoped to stream 3D: digital 3D movies in 2026 go to headsets, not to TVs [40]. See which streaming services have 3D movies.
The newest 3D TVs are about ten years old and the oldest sixteen. Used prices swing with condition and with whether working glasses are included, so check recently sold listings for the exact model number, not asking prices.
Run the four checks, in person if you can, then settle three more things.
- Active or passive. Extra passive glasses are cheap; an active set depends on its own. How the two types work is further down.
- The glasses. Ask how many pairs come with the TV and, for an active set, whether their model number matches it. Do not count on buying new pairs from the maker: Samsung's US page for the SSG-5150GB glasses that shipped with its 2015 sets now returns "not found" [28].
- A source. You need a 3D Blu-ray player connected by HDMI. Some 4K Blu-ray players also play 3D discs; the Sony UBP-X700 does [42].
Passive sets: how many lines each eye sees on a 1080p and on a 4K panel
On a passive set, the panel's resolution decides what each eye sees.
| Passive set | Lines each eye sees |
|---|---|
| 1080p | 540 |
| 4K, such as LG's 2016 models | 1,080, the full resolution of a 3D Blu-ray [39] |
The best 3D TVs to look for are the last ones made, because they have the newest panels: LG's 2016 OLEDs and UH9500, Samsung's 2015 JS9500 and JS8500, and Sony's 2016 Z9D.
For the player, the discs and the glasses, see 3D Blu-ray players in 2026, 3D Blu-ray in 2026 and types of 3D glasses.

Meta has announced more 3D films for headsets. On September 23, 2026, Meta said Disney+ will stream films in 3D "in select countries" from November, that Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ "are also offering their 3D media catalogs for the very first time", and that a store to rent or buy 2D and 3D films opens "later this year on Meta Quest in the US". It also announced a lighter headset, Meta VR Glasses, for spring 2027 at $1,299.99 [56]. The post does not name the countries, or say which headsets get the streaming services' 3D films. Today, digital 3D films are sold mainly for Apple Vision Pro [40].
Where each option gets its 3D: disc player, computer, headset store or your own files
Each takes its 3D from a different place.
| Option | Where the 3D comes from |
|---|---|
| 3D TV, used or old stock | 3D Blu-ray player |
| 3D projector | 3D Blu-ray player or computer |
| VR headset | Vision Pro: 3D movies in the Apple TV app. Quest, as of October 2026: your own 3D video files in a player app [41][43] |
| Video glasses | Side-by-side 3D video from a connected device [36] |
| Glasses-free 3D display | A computer running the maker's software |
Side-by-side 3D video has the left and right pictures packed into one frame.
The overview of every route is how to watch 3D movies at home.
One source is newer than a 3D disc or a 3D file: an ordinary 2D film, converted to 3D.
2D films in 3D, instantly: the Owl3D Shift
Owl3D, the publisher of this guide, makes the Shift. It is not a TV: it is a 14-inch glasses-free 3D display that sits beside a computer as a second monitor and shows 3D to one viewer at a time. It has no tuner, apps or disc drive, and a disc player or game console cannot be plugged straight into it.
Instant, as it plays. Live 3D Screen converts any window you drag onto the Shift from 2D to 3D in real time, with no waiting and no file to prepare. Any 2D film you can already play on the computer shows in 3D: a DVD or Blu-ray disc in a player program, a video file, or a streaming site in a browser. It needs the Owl3D app on a Windows PC with an NVIDIA RTX 30-series graphics card or newer, or on a Mac with Apple Silicon. Owl3D Link does the same instant conversion for ordinary 2D video on a Meta Quest headset, sent wirelessly from a Windows PC.
From a file, for the highest quality. Owl3D's converter is not instant: it turns a video file you have the right to use into a side-by-side or top-bottom 3D file, and it is where Owl3D's best 3D comes from. Its highest-quality model, StereoGen, is coming soon. It takes hours to convert a film on an NVIDIA RTX graphics card, and Owl3D describes the result as "Hollywood-grade 3D at the highest quality".
Both are AI conversions of the 2D picture, not the film's own 3D version.
Netflix and other copy-protected streaming. Live 3D Screen works with these in a browser once the browser's hardware acceleration is turned off; Owl3D's tutorial shows the setting. Streaming services set their own terms of use. This is not legal advice.
On the Shift: playing 3D files you already have
Stereo 3D Playback shows 3D video you already have: play a side-by-side or top-bottom 3D file in a media player on the Shift's screen, then press Start on the Stereo 3D Playback tab in the app.

Are glasses-free 3D TVs coming?
Not from a major brand yet: as of October 2026 none sells one.
What was shown in 2026: TCL and Visual Semiconductor at CES, CSOT at IFA, and one made-to-order display
At CES in January 2026, TCL showed a 65-inch 8K glasses-free prototype, and a second 65-inch 8K set used Visual Semiconductor's GF3D technology [29][30]. At IFA in September, TCL's panel maker CSOT showed a 65-inch panel that runs at 8K in 2D and 4K in 3D, without saying whether it needs glasses and with no model name, price or date [31]. A 3D specialist shop, Tridimensional, lists a made-to-order glasses-free 3D display, in its professional category [22].
What is sold, and how the technology works, is in can you watch 3D without glasses and what is a lenticular lens.
What is a 3D TV? Active and passive 3D
A 3D TV shows a slightly different picture to each eye, and the brain combines the two into depth. This is called stereoscopic 3D. The 3D TVs sold from 2010 to 2017 needed glasses, and came in two types.
Active shutter and passive polarized 3D
Screen
Left eye
Right eye
Active 3D. The TV flashes the left-eye and right-eye pictures in turn, and battery-powered "shutter" glasses black out each eye in sync. Each eye gets the full picture resolution, but the glasses cost more and mostly work with one brand only [23].
Passive 3D. A polarizing layer on the screen sends alternate lines to each eye. The glasses are light, cheap and battery-free, like the ones handed out at movie theaters, but each eye gets half the screen's lines [24]. LG sold this as Cinema 3D [11].
What happened to 3D TVs, and why they failed
3D TVs arrived in 2010, after Avatar's run in theaters [1]. Sales rose, then interest fell. Five things worked against them. In short: the glasses, too little to watch, discomfort, a dimmer picture, and TV makers' move to 4K.

The five reasons, with dates and quotes, and two sales figures
- The glasses. Every viewer needed a pair, and active pairs needed power and cost more than passive ones [23].
- Too little to watch. ESPN 3D launched in June 2010 and closed on September 30, 2013, citing "limited viewer adoption of 3D services" [21]. DirecTV cancelled its full-time 3D channel in 2012 [1].
- Comfort. Some people do not have stereo vision, and others got eye strain or headaches from 3D TV [20].
- A dimmer picture. Active glasses shut out the light to each eye half the time [23], and a TV reviewer at Tom's Guide wrote that the glasses "naturally dimmed the picture" [53]. By 2016 the selling point was HDR (high dynamic range), which calls for a brighter screen, and What Hi-Fi? reported Samsung's view that 4K HDR, not 3D with glasses, was the way to make the picture look realistic [52].
- TV makers moved on to 4K. Vizio's 2014 lineup dropped 3D and added its first consumer 4K TVs [5], and Samsung cited "limited consumer demand for 3D" and how little 3D content was being made [3]. LG cut 3D from 40 percent of its lineup to 20 percent for 2016 [4], then to none [1].
The rise and the fall, in two figures:
Frequently asked questions
Which Samsung TVs are 3D?
Samsung's last were the 2015 JS9500, JS8500 and JU7100, all active 3D sets, in the table of last models, and it has not brought 3D back since [1][52]. Earlier Samsung series with 3D, as listed in the importer's catalog described above, include the D6000 to D8000, ES6000 to ES8000, F6100 to F8000 and H6400 to H8000, and the 4K HU8500, HU8700 and JS9000 [46]. Samsung's current glasses-free 3D product, the Odyssey 3D, is a PC monitor, not a TV [37].
Is there a 4K, OLED, 8K or 100-inch 3D TV?
4K, yes: the last Samsung, LG and Sony 3D sets in the table of last models are all 4K TVs, though 3D Blu-ray discs themselves are 1080p [39]. OLED, yes: LG's 2016 G6, E6 and C6, the last LG OLEDs with 3D. 8K: we found none.
100 inches: the largest 3D TVs we confirmed on makers' spec sheets are Samsung's 88-inch JS9500 [7] and LG's 86-inch UH9500 [10]. Sony's Z9D came in a 100-inch size [51], but we could not confirm from Sony that it had 3D. For a 100-inch 3D picture today, the practical route is a projector.
Can I turn my regular TV into a 3D TV?
Not into a real one. 3D is built into the screen: passive sets have a polarizing layer on the panel [24] and active sets synchronize with their glasses [23], so a software update cannot add it. The one method that works on any color screen is anaglyph 3D, which uses red-cyan glasses and video made in that format, at the cost of washed-out color, especially reds [25]. See anaglyph 3D.
Do they still make 3D movies?
Yes. Films are still released in 3D, and some reach disc: Avatar: Fire and Ash arrived on 3D Blu-ray in the US on May 19, 2026 [39]. See the best 3D movies and how to watch each one.
