VR Movies: How to Watch Movies in VR, in 2D and 3D
How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 52 listed at the end.
Short answer
VR movies are either films made for VR, which surround you, or ordinary films watched on a huge virtual screen in a headset. You can watch both on a Meta Quest or an Apple Vision Pro. For a film made for VR, start with Invasion!, a free six-minute short on Quest, or Submerged on Vision Pro. To watch 3D movies on a Quest 3 today, play your own side-by-side 3D file in a player app.

Key takeaways
- Meta has announced studio 3D films; none is live yet. On September 23, 2026 it announced Disney+ in 3D from November 2026 in select countries, first 3D catalogs from Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+, and a store for renting and buying films on Meta Quest in the US later this year. Its post does not say whether the Disney+ films or the three catalogs reach Quest 3 and 3S: what Meta announced.
- Until then, Skybox, Bigscreen and 4XVR play your own files on a Quest, 3D ones included, for $0 to $29.99: VR cinema apps compared.
- Ordinary 2D video playing on a Windows PC needs no 3D file: Owl3D Link, Owl3D's app for Meta Quest, streams the PC's screen to the headset, converted to 3D instantly as it plays. That is an AI conversion, not a studio's own 3D version: the two Owl3D routes.
- Studio 3D films are sold and streamed today on Apple Vision Pro, in the Apple TV app and on Disney+: Vision Pro.
- Netflix has no headset app. It plays in the headset's web browser, on a flat screen: streaming apps on a Quest.
Quick picks
- To spend nothingBigscreen, free
- 3D files with the least setupSkybox, $9.99, because it detects the layout

- On Apple Vision Prothe Apple TV app for bought and rented films; Moon Player or 4XVR for your own files
"VR movies" means two different things
Films made for VR
- What you see video or animation that wraps around you; you turn your head to look around the scene
- Where from YouTube, Meta's TV app, the Apple TV app, headset app stores
Ordinary films watched in VR
- What you see a flat screen floating in a virtual theater or in your room
- The film the normal 2D or 3D version
- Where from a streaming app, or your own files in a player app

Two more titles, and a line on each film
| Title | What it is | Length | Price | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Space Explorers: The ISS Experience | Documentary series (2020 to 2022) filmed aboard the International Space Station [11], [50] | Four episodes | Not confirmed | Meta Quest [11] |
| The Limit | Robert Rodriguez's live-action action short | About 20 minutes | $4.99 | Steam, for PC headsets [46] |
- Invasion! Two aliens meet two bunnies. The Meta Horizon Store lists it as "INVASION! Anniversary Edition" [44].
- Wolves in the Walls. Its store page cites a 2019 Primetime Emmy.
- Gloomy Eyes. About a zombie boy and a human girl.
- The Limit. With Michelle Rodriguez and Norman Reedus, in a picture slightly wider than 180 degrees [13].
- Space Explorers: The ISS Experience. We could not confirm what the series costs. A free app called "Space Explorers Ultimate Edition" is listed [52].
On Apple Vision Pro
Start with Submerged, a scripted thriller, then Prehistoric Planet Immersive, Wild Life, Adventure and Alicia Keys: Rehearsal Room [11], [27]. In the Apple TV app, tap Vision in the tab bar and choose a title marked Apple Immersive [7]. What Apple has said about their cost is in the free section.
Horror
For a studio horror film, Blumhouse Enhanced Cinema launched in October 2025 on Quest 3 and 3S in the US, renting M3GAN and The Black Phone for $5 each. Both play in 2D, with effects such as shattering glass added around the screen [15].
Made for VR: Crypt TV's Haunted House: Trick-VR-Treat (2022), a 30-minute, 180-degree film, and The Faceless Lady (2024), a live-action series, both for Meta's Horizon Worlds [29]. Check that they can still be watched there.
3D feature films that suit a headset
MIXED's July 2026 picks are Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Encanto, all on Disney+ on Vision Pro, plus Gravity and the two Dune films in the Apple TV app's 3D library [11]. For more, with where each one can be watched, see the best 3D movies.
360-degree and 180-degree VR movies
A film made for VR is a 360-degree video, which surrounds you completely, or a 180-degree video, which fills the half in front of you [14]. Some, such as Gloomy Eyes, are apps installed from the headset's store [39]. YouTube's VR app has a search filter for 360 and for VR180 videos [8].
The video formats that films made for VR come in: 360-degree, VR180, Apple Immersive Video
- 360-degree video is a sphere of video all around you [14].
- VR180 covers the half-sphere in front of you. YouTube lists it among its 3D formats [14], [22].
- Apple Immersive Video is Apple's format: "180-degree 3D 8K recordings captured with Spatial Audio" [27]. It plays in the Apple TV app on Apple Vision Pro [7].
A fourth kind is an app, not a video file: animated stories such as Gloomy Eyes and Wolves in the Walls are sold in the headset's store and installed like a game [39], [43].
How to watch movies on a Meta Quest
On a Quest you either open a streaming app or play your own files in a player app.

Open a streaming app. Each one shows the film in 2D on a virtual screen.
- Prime Video has a Quest app with 1080p playback and downloads for offline viewing [25].
- Disney+ has a Quest app with downloads. It streams in 2D today [12], [24]. Meta has announced Disney+ in 3D from November 2026 without saying on which headsets [1].
- YouTube VR plays regular videos on a virtual screen, which can be curved, and plays movies bought on YouTube at up to 4K [8].
- Netflix has no Quest app. Open netflix.com in the Meta Quest Browser; it plays at up to 1080p [2].
Meta's TV app is the Quest's hub for streaming services and immersive clips [11], and Meta says more services are coming to it [1].
Or play your own files in a player app: Skybox, Bigscreen, 4XVR or Virtual Desktop, all in the app tables.
How to watch 3D movies on a Quest 3
Today, play a side-by-side or top-bottom 3D video file in a player app such as Skybox, Bigscreen or 4XVR, or stream a PC's screen converted to 3D with Owl3D Link. No major service that we found sells or streams studio 3D films on Quest yet; Meta has announced a 3D concert film for Quest in November 2026 and a rent-or-buy store later this year.
3D here means stereoscopic 3D: each eye gets its own, slightly different image. A headset already shows each eye a separate picture, so it needs no 3D glasses.
What Meta announced, and what is on Quest today
On September 23, 2026, Meta announced a new VR device, Meta VR Glasses, on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99, and with it a run of 3D films [1]. None of it is live as of October 7, 2026.

| Announced by Meta | When and where | What the post leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| Disney+ in 3D, with The Avengers and Black Panther named | From November 2026, "in select countries" [1] | Which countries, and which headsets |
| Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ "offering their 3D media catalogs for the very first time" [1] | No date | Titles, countries and headsets |
| A store to rent or buy "hundreds of movies", 2D and 3D | "later this year on Meta Quest in the US" [1] | Its name, prices and opening date [20] |
| Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, the concert film co-directed by Billie Eilish and James Cameron, to buy and rent in 3D | On Quest, November 2026 [1] | The price |
Meta makes the Disney+ and three-catalog announcements while introducing Meta VR Glasses and does not say whether they also reach Quest 3 and 3S. Only the store and the concert film are promised for Quest by name. Disney+ on Quest was still listed as 2D on October 7, 2026 [24]. For the glasses themselves, see how to watch 3D movies on Meta VR Glasses and Meta VR Glasses vs Quest 3 for films.
What a Quest plays in 3D today:
- Your own 3D files, in a player app: the steps below.
- Creators' 3D and VR180 videos, in the YouTube VR app [8].
- 3D rentals in Bigscreen, possibly. Its Steam page says you can "rent and watch high quality 3D movies in VR" [6], but its Quest listing does not mention rentals [5]; check inside the app.
Last checked : what is on Quest.
Play your own 3D file, step by step
- Start with a 3D file you have the right to use. That is 3D video you shot yourself (see 3D cameras and spatial photos and video), a freely licensed file such as Big Buck Bunny (see the free section), or your own 2D video converted to 3D.
- Check the layout of the file. See the layouts below.
- Get the file to the headset. Pick one of the four ways below.
- Open it in the player. Skybox detects the 3D layout when you open a file [4], and 4XVR's listing says it recognizes full and half side-by-side and over-under layouts [17]. If you see two copies of the picture next to each other, set the player's 3D mode by hand to match the layout.
The 3D file layouts
A 3D video file holds the left-eye and right-eye pictures in a single frame. The layout is how the two are arranged.
One 3D picture, four ways to pack it

For a Quest, use side-by-side or top-bottom; every Quest player in the app tables lists both.
The 3D file layouts compared: what each file contains, and spatial video
| Layout | What the file contains | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Full side-by-side (Full SBS) | Both pictures next to each other at full width: 3840 x 1080 for a 1080p film [28] | The sharpest option; a 16:9 picture becomes a 32:9 frame [9] |
| Half side-by-side (Half SBS) | Both pictures squeezed into one 1920 x 1080 frame [28] | Each eye gets half the horizontal detail |
| Top-bottom (over-under) | The two pictures stacked [9] | Listed by every Quest player in the app tables |
| MV-HEVC | Apple's spatial video format | For Vision Pro |
A Quest plays iPhone spatial videos uploaded through Meta's phone app [30], and 4XVR Premium lists 3D playback of 1080p spatial video [31]. For other 3D files, use side-by-side or top-bottom.
Four ways to get the file to the headset
Copy it over a USB cable, plug in a flash drive, share it over Wi-Fi, or stream it straight from the computer.
The four routes step by step: USB cable, flash drive, Wi-Fi, streaming from the computer
USB cable from a Windows PC. Connect the headset with a USB-C cable, put the headset on and choose Allow when it asks, then open the headset in File Explorer, under Internal shared storage [34]. Copy the film into the Movies folder, creating the folder if it is not there [35]. Meta's help page describes this connection for copying recordings off the headset [34]; copying a film onto it uses the same window.
USB flash drive. Skybox reads a drive plugged into the headset's USB port. MIXED's February 2024 test found that it recognized FAT32, exFAT, NTFS and HFS+ drives and listed the films under "USB Files" once read permission was granted. A slow drive stuttered, and the headset cannot charge while the drive is plugged in [36].
FAT32 cannot hold a single file of 4 GB or more [51], so a long film may need a drive formatted as exFAT or NTFS.
Wi-Fi from a computer. Skybox plays files from DLNA and SMB shares, two common ways of sharing files on a home network. Its PC client is a free download [4]. On a Mac, turn on sharing over SMB: System Settings, General, Sharing, the info button next to File Sharing, then Options and "Share files and folders using SMB" [37].
Straight from the computer. Virtual Desktop streams videos stored on a Windows 10 or 11 PC, or on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later [32].
Watch a 2D movie in 3D on a Quest: two Owl3D routes
With no 3D file, ordinary 2D video can be converted to 3D instead: instantly as it plays, or as a file. Owl3D, the publisher of this guide, makes this software. Both routes are AI conversions of a 2D picture: instant and live, or the highest quality from a file. Neither is footage shot with two lenses or a studio's own 3D version of a film.
Instant: watch as it plays. Owl3D Link is Owl3D's companion app for Meta Quest headsets. With the Owl3D desktop app running on a Windows PC, it streams the PC's screen to the headset wirelessly, converted from 2D to 3D instantly, in real time. The video plays on the PC and arrives in the headset in 3D: no waiting, and no 3D file to make or copy.
- What you need: a Meta Quest headset and a Windows PC running the Owl3D app. It does not work from a Mac.
- Setup: Owl3D's walkthrough is Watch Movies on Meta Quest: The Setup Most New Owners Miss.
Highest quality: convert a file. Owl3D's desktop app, for Windows and Mac, is an AI 2D-to-3D converter: it turns ordinary video files into stereoscopic 3D, and the processing runs on your own computer. StereoGen, Owl3D's strongest conversion model, is coming soon with the next version of the converter. It is not instant: it takes a video file you have the right to use and hours of processing on an NVIDIA RTX graphics card, and Owl3D describes the result as "Hollywood-grade 3D at the highest quality".
Converting a file with the Owl3D app: the steps, the four output formats, Apple Vision Pro, plans
- Open the video. Use the Owl3D desktop app.
- Choose the output format. For a player app on a Quest or another VR headset, pick side-by-side, which the app labels "Side-by-side (VR/AR)", or Half Side-by-Side. Top-Bottom is the third choice, for a player or device that asks for it.
- Export, then move the file. Get it to the headset in one of the four ways above.
For an Apple Vision Pro, the app has a fourth format on a Mac, Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro. It is not offered on Windows. From a Windows PC, the other route is a side-by-side export opened in a Vision Pro player that lists side-by-side 3D, such as 4XVR [33].
Those four formats are the only outputs. The app has a free tier and paid plans; what each plan covers is on the pricing page.
Free VR movies, from legitimate sources
- YouTube. 360, VR180 and 3D videos, with a search filter for each in its VR app [8].
- Invasion! Free on the Meta Horizon Store and on Steam; see the title table.
- Free shorts on Steam, for PC headsets. Allumette, about an orphan girl in a city in the clouds [47]; Pearl, an Oscar-nominated short set inside a hatchback [49]; and Colosse, in which a hunter meets a titan [48]. They need a PC VR headset, or a Quest streaming from a VR-ready Windows PC [32].
- Apple Immersive titles, on Vision Pro. Apple said at launch in 2024 that its immersive films and series came "at no additional cost" [27]. Check each title today.
- DeoVR. A site and app that streams free 180, 360 and 3D videos, such as travel, nature and music, at up to 8K. It also has a paid tier [21].
- Bigscreen. Its free app carries TV channels showing movies, sports and comedy [5].
- Big Buck Bunny. A 10-minute open film under a Creative Commons Attribution license, with stereoscopic 3D versions released in 2013 [26]. It is a handy test file; for more, see where to find 3D videos.
Be wary of sites that offer current studio films in 3D for free without naming a license.
VR cinema apps compared
Four player apps cover a Quest and two cover a Vision Pro. Side-by-side and top-bottom (also called over-under) are the 3D file layouts.
Player apps for your own files
| App | Headset | Cost | What it plays | 3D |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skybox VR Video Player | Quest | $9.99 | Your own files, from the headset, a USB drive or the home network | Side-by-side, top-bottom, VR180, 360 [4] |
| Bigscreen | Quest, PC headsets through Steam | Free | Your own files, a Windows PC's screen, TV channels, shared rooms | Side-by-side, over-under [5], [6] |
| 4XVR Video Player | Quest, Vision Pro | Free to download; $29.99 one-time Premium purchase | Your own files; Premium adds USB drives and network playback | Full and half side-by-side, full and half over-under, 180, 360 [17], [31], [33] |
| Virtual Desktop | Quest | $24.99 | A Windows or Mac computer's screen, and videos stored on it | Side-by-side, over-under [32] |
| Moon Player | Vision Pro | $8.99 | Your own 2D, 3D, 180 and 360 files, including from a PC or a network drive | Yes [16] |
Last checked : prices and 3D support, from each app's store listing.
The picks at the top of this page are drawn from these store listings, not from hands-on tests. MIXED names 4XVR and Skybox together as the apps for local 3D movie files [11].

How to watch movies and 3D movies on an Apple Vision Pro
Use the Apple TV app for films you rent or buy, 3D versions included. Disney+ streams some films in 3D on this headset too.
The headset starts at $3,499, and Apple rates the battery at up to three hours of video playback [18].

3D films in the Apple TV app
Rent or buy films here, including 3D versions; Apple calls the app "home to one of the largest digital collections of 3D movies available" [18]. Apple's steps for playing one [7]:
- Find the 3D films. Tap Vision or Search in the tab bar, then tap 3D movies.
- Pick a film. If you do not own it, buy or rent the 3D version under How to Watch.
- Play it. Press play and choose Play in 3D.

Films you already bought from Apple play in 3D at no extra charge once a 3D version exists [7]. Apple's launch examples included Avatar: The Way of Water, Dune and The Super Mario Bros. Movie [27].
Disney+ in 3D, Netflix and your own files
Disney+ streams some films in 3D on this headset, among them Avatar: The Way of Water and Avengers: Endgame [12]. Netflix has no app; it plays in Safari [3]. For your own files, use Moon Player or 4XVR; both are in the app tables.
More on Vision Pro: other streaming apps, Netflix downloads, camera footage and spatial videos
- Other streaming apps. Apple's launch list included HBO Max (then called Max), Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV and Tubi [27]. YouTube has a Vision Pro app too [8].
- Netflix downloads. Not supported on this headset [3].
- Camera footage and spatial videos. visionOS 26 plays 180-degree, 360-degree and wide field-of-view video from Insta360, GoPro and Canon cameras without extra software [10]. Spatial videos open in the Photos app, under Spatial in the tab bar [38].
Where to get 3D movies, by headset
| Headset | Where studio 3D films are offered |
|---|---|
| Apple Vision Pro | The Apple TV app, to rent or buy, and Disney+ for some films (steps above) |
| Samsung Galaxy XR | Google TV: more than 50 3D films to rent or buy, as Android Authority reported in December 2025 [19] |
| Meta Quest | None from a major service yet. Announced: a rent-or-buy store on Quest in the US later this year, and Disney+ in 3D from November 2026, though Meta does not say whether on Quest; see what Meta announced |
