VR movies: films made for VR, free and paid, and where to watch them

Updated

How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 31 listed at the end.

Short answer

Yes, there are films made for VR. A VR movie is a film made to be watched inside a headset: a 180- or 360-degree video [1][2], or an app in which you take part in the story [3]. Thirteen are listed below, six of them free, on Meta Quest, PC headsets, YouTube and Apple Vision Pro. On a Quest, Invasion! is free and six minutes long [4]. We have not watched these films: each line gives what the film's own page says, read on October 11, 2026. For an ordinary film on a big virtual screen, see how to watch movies in VR.

Key takeaways

  • Free: Invasion! on Quest, Steam and YouTube; Pearl and Allumette on Steam; Submerged on Vision Pro. See free VR movies.
  • The paid ones cost $4.99 to $8.99 and run 15 to 45 minutes where the page gives a length. See VR movies you pay for.
  • Most are apps you install from the headset's store, not video files, and several are interactive.
  • For horror, Warner Bros. has two short 360-degree films free on YouTube. See VR horror.

Free VR movies

TitleWhat it is, by its own pageLengthWhere it plays
Invasion!Animated short narrated by Ethan Hawke: two aliens are thwarted by two bunnies6 minutesMeta Quest [4]; PC headsets, on Steam [5]; YouTube, as a 360 video [6]
PearlAnimated short that follows "a girl and her dad as they crisscross the country chasing their dreams"Not listedPC headsets, on Steam [7]
AllumetteThe story of "a young orphan girl who lives in a fantastical city in the clouds"Not listedPC headsets, on Steam [8]
SubmergedThriller aboard a WWII-era submarine, written and directed by Edward BergerNot stated; Apple calls it a short filmApple Vision Pro [9]
IT: FLOAT - A Cinematic VR ExperienceA 360 video from Warner Bros.: "Meet Pennywise and enter the sewers of Derry"4 minutes 33 secondsYouTube, on the Warner Bros. channel [10]
Space Explorers Ultimate EditionFelix & Paul Studios' space videos in 8K, among them Space Explorers: The ISS Experience, "the largest production ever filmed in space"A library, not one filmMeta Quest 3 and 3S [11]

Last checked : each store or video page showed the title as free; Submerged rests on Apple's 2024 announcement.

Three things to know before you pick one:

  • The Steam titles need a PC. They run through SteamVR on a Windows computer [5][7][8]. To use a Quest that way, see how to connect a Meta Quest to a PC.
  • "Free" has small print on two of them. Steam's pages for Invasion! and Allumette each carry a line saying the film is free for a limited time; both were free today [5][8]. Space Explorers Ultimate Edition is free to install [11]; we did not see whether everything inside it is free.
  • Submerged rests on Apple's announcement. Apple said on October 10, 2024 that it was "available to Apple Vision Pro users around the world for free" [9]. We have no Vision Pro to confirm that today.

Madrid NoirInteractive mystery in two acts45 minutes$8.99Meta Quest [17]; PC headsets, on Steam [18]
The LimitRobert Rodriguez's action film with Michelle Rodriguez and Norman Reedus, in a picture "wider than 180 degrees"20 minutes$4.99PC headsets, on Steam [19]

Last checked : prices in US dollars as each store page showed them; Meta's pages were read from outside the United States, Steam's with US pricing.

The Line, Wolves in the Walls and Madrid Noir call themselves interactive [12][3][17]. In Wolves in the Walls, for one, you take photographs and search for clues with a magnifying glass [3]. Madrid Noir's Quest listing gives Standing and Roomscale as its player modes, with no seated one [17], so check that line on a listing if you plan to watch from the sofa.

Which award claims check out

Several store pages claim awards. Three of the claims match the awarding body's own page:

  • Wolves in the Walls. The Television Academy lists "Wolves In The Walls: It's All Over" as winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Innovation In Interactive Media (Juried), 2019 [20].
  • Goliath: Playing with Reality. La Biennale di Venezia's awards list for the 78th Venice Film Festival, in 2021, gives it the Grand Jury Prize for Best VR Work [21].
  • Pearl. The Academy's page for the 89th Academy Awards, 2017, lists it among the nominees for Short Film (Animated) [22].

The other claims are the store pages' own, and we did not confirm them. The Line's store page says it won a 2020 Primetime Emmy and "Best VR Experience at 76th Venice International Film Festival" [12]. Madrid Noir's says it won an Emmy in 2022 [17]. The page for Gloomy Eyes names 2019 awards at Annecy and SXSW [15], and the page for Invasion! calls it "Emmy Winning" [4].

VR horror

Two that we could open today are studio shorts, both free 360-degree videos on the Warner Bros. YouTube channel. IT: FLOAT - A Cinematic VR Experience runs 4 minutes 33 seconds; its description reads "Meet Pennywise and enter the sewers of Derry" [10]. The Conjuring 2 - Experience Enfield VR 360 runs 3 minutes 8 seconds; its description says only "In theaters June 10, 2016!" [23]. On a headset, the YouTube VR app plays 360 videos [29].

Where to find more

Names are as each company's page printed them on October 11, 2026.

  • Meta Horizon TV, on a Quest. Meta's help page says the TV app is "pre-installed on all Meta Quest headsets" and that a title's page in it shows "Information about viewing modes (180, 360, immersive, etc.)" [24]. Two people replying in Quest groups on Facebook point askers there for one title. Under a post of September 19, 2025, one wrote: "The Faceless Lady on Meta TV app" [25]. Under a post of June 19, 2024, another wrote: "go to meta quest tv app and search for the faceless lady" [26]. We searched the Meta Horizon Store for "the faceless lady" on October 11, 2026 and no title by that name came back [27]; we could not look inside the TV app.
  • Meta Horizon Store. The Quest films above carry the genre label Narrative or Media [15][3]. Under the platform "Link PC VR", the store has a section named "Movies & Narratives" [28].
  • The YouTube VR app. It runs on Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, PICO 4 and Apple Vision Pro, with what YouTube calls "added support for immersive 360 videos and virtual reality content" [29].
  • The Apple TV app, on Vision Pro. Tap Vision in the tab bar and choose a title marked Apple Immersive, Apple's name for its "180-degree 8K recordings, captured with Spatial Audio" [2].

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch a VR movie without a headset?

The YouTube ones, yes. YouTube plays 180 and 360 degree videos on a computer in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera, and in its phone app [1]. With the Android app and a Google Cardboard viewer, the phone becomes a simple headset; YouTube says Cardboard is not supported on iPhone and iPad [30]. The store titles in the tables are headset apps.

Is there a VR movie on Netflix?

Netflix's help page for the Quest says "Netflix is available through the Meta Quest Browser for Meta Quest headsets" [31]. The part of the page we could read names no film made for VR.

Do these play on an older Quest?

Every Quest listing in the two tables names Meta Quest 3S, Quest 3, Quest Pro, Quest 2 and the original Quest as supported [4][12][13][14][15][3][17], with one exception: Space Explorers Ultimate Edition lists Quest 3 and 3S only [11].
