Meta VR Glasses vs Quest 3 for Movies: Should You Wait?
How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 16 listed at the end.
Short answer
Wait if films are the main reason you want a headset and you can go without one until spring. Buy or keep a Quest 3 or 3S if you want to watch this week, play Quest games, or spend under $600. Meta VR Glasses are not on sale: Meta announced them on September 23, 2026 for spring 2027 at $1,299.99, so there is no review of a retail unit, and this comparison rests on the makers' stated figures.

Meta VR Glasses: about 100 grams on the face, by Meta's figure, and due on sale in spring 2027. Image: Meta.
Key takeaways
- More pixels per degree, in a narrower view. Meta lists 37 pixels per degree on micro-OLED for the glasses, 25 for Quest 3 and 20 for Quest 3S on LCD. Field of view goes the other way, 70 degrees across against 110 and 96: the specs.
- About 100 grams on your face, by Meta's figure, instead of about 515, because the computer and battery sit in a separate puck. The battery is rated at up to three hours of video: what the glasses add.
- $1,299.99 as announced, against $599.99 for Quest 3, $349.99 for Quest 3S and from $3,499 for Apple Vision Pro. Touch Plus controllers are a separate purchase on the glasses: what you give up.
- Studio 3D films are sold and streamed on Apple Vision Pro today. For Meta's headsets they are announced, with Disney+ in 3D from November 2026 in select countries and a rent-or-buy store on Quest in the US later this year: 3D films on each.
- Most films exist only in 2D. A 2D video you have the right to use can be converted to a 3D file with Owl3D's converter (an AI conversion, not a studio's 3D version), and a Quest can show a Windows PC's screen in 3D instantly with Owl3D Link: 2D films in 3D.

Three are on sale today. Meta VR Glasses are announced for spring 2027, and their figures can change before they ship. Nobody has reviewed a retail pair, so the "best for" lines rest on stated figures and announcements, not on testing.

Last checked : prices, weights and availability, against the sources numbered on each card.
Where these prices and weights come from
- Quest prices are the ones Meta announced on April 16, 2026, in force from April 19 [5]. Check the store for the price today.
- Apple's $3,499 is the starting price it announced for the current model in October 2025 [8].
- Quest 3 weight is worked out from Road to VR's report that the 514-gram Quest 3S is 1 gram lighter than Quest 3 [13].
Meta VR Glasses vs Quest 3, Quest 3S and Apple Vision Pro: picture and battery
The glasses put more pixels into a narrower view: 37 pixels per degree across 70 degrees, against 25 across 110 on a Quest 3. Pixels per degree is the number of display pixels that cover one degree of your view; higher means more pixels for the same part of the view. Field of view is how wide the picture can be.
Every figure is the maker's own. The Meta VR Glasses figures are announcements for a product due in spring 2027.
| Headset | Display | Pixels per degree | Field of view | Battery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta VR Glasses | Micro-OLED, 2412 x 2288 per eye, 120 Hz; Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG [1], [4] | 37 [1], [4] | 70° across, 66° high [4] | "up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback" [1] |
| Meta Quest 3 | LCD, 2064 x 2208 per eye, 120 Hz [4] | 25 [4] | 110° across, 96° high [4] | About 2 hours [4] |
| Meta Quest 3S | LCD, 1832 x 1920 per eye, 120 Hz [4] | 20 [4] | 96° across, 90° high [4] | About 2.5 hours [4] |
| Apple Vision Pro | Micro-OLED, 23 million pixels in total, up to 120 Hz; Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG [6] | Not stated by Apple | Not stated by Apple | Up to 3 hours of video, 2.5 hours of general use [6] |
The battery figures do not all measure the same thing. Meta's three hours for the glasses and Apple's three hours are for video [1], [6]. Meta's page gives the Quest 3 and 3S figures without saying what use they are for [4].

What do Meta VR Glasses add for watching films?
A denser picture, far less weight on your face, cinema picture and sound formats, and a promised 3D film catalog. All of it is Meta's description of a product it has not yet sold.

The picture. Meta calls the display a "5K Infinite Display built on micro-OLED panels, with 37 pixels per degree" [1]. Its developer page lists Quest 3 at 25 and Quest 3S at 20, both on LCD panels [4]. Micro-OLED is the panel type Apple Vision Pro uses [6].
Cinema formats. The glasses are listed with Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG for the display and Dolby Atmos for the speakers in the frames [1], [4]. The same developer page lists none of these for Quest 3 or 3S [4], although Road to VR reported in December 2025 that the Disney+ app on Quest streams select titles in Dolby Vision [14]. The glasses are also "the first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device" and "one of the only ways to experience select films in IMAX's exclusive expanded aspect ratio at home", in Meta's words [1].
The weight. About 100 grams, which Meta puts at "five times lighter than Meta Quest 3" [1]. The computer, battery and storage sit in a puck on a cable that clips to a pocket or bag [1].
The films. Disney+ in 3D, first 3D catalogs from Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+, films to rent or buy, and "first time in 3D" films from James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision in 2027 are announced [1]. The product page calls this "the largest library of 3D movies on demand" [2]. That is Meta's claim, and the catalog is not open yet.
A wired input. The puck has a DisplayPort input for use "as a Mac, Windows, or console display" [4]. A Quest 3 or 3S has none [4].
What one person who tried them reported
Road to VR's Scott Hayden had a hands-on preview at Meta's Connect conference. He wrote that the 70-degree horizontal field of view is "noticeably smaller" than Quest 3's 110 degrees, and that the lenses are "very clear, although the sweet spot isn't as large as Quest 3" [15]. His own caution: "A half-hour demo is a poor basis for understanding long-term comfort for any device" [15]. It is not a review.
What do you give up compared with a Quest 3?
A wider view, controllers in the box, a price under half as high, and a headset you can use this week.
- You cannot buy them yet. "Launching in Spring 2027" in Meta's post; "Coming early 2027" on its product page [1], [2]. Road to VR reports launch regions that include the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Japan and Australia [11].
- The battery tops out at three hours. The figure is "up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback", with 45W fast charging [1]. A film longer than that outlasts Meta's own figure. This is a limit of the glasses, not something a Quest 3 does better: Meta's page lists a Quest 3 at about 2 hours, without saying for what use [4]. Road to VR's specification list says the puck can charge during use [11]; Meta's own pages do not say so.
- The picture is narrower. 70 degrees across and 66 high, against 110 and 96 on a Quest 3 [4]. How large a cinema screen feels at 70 degrees is something to judge from reviews, not from the number.
- The sides are open. In Meta's words, the "open sides and passthrough camera keep you aware of what's happening nearby" [1]. UploadVR reports that light blockers are optional attachments [10].
- Controllers cost extra. There are none in the box. Meta's announcement says: "Pair Touch Plus controllers to enjoy access to the Meta Quest catalog with thousands of titles." [1] Its developer page lists them as "available for purchase separately" [4]. UploadVR reports that the controllers from a Quest 3 or 3S can be paired instead [10].
- $1,299.99 is more than twice a Quest 3 [1], [5]. Prescription inserts are sold separately [2].
- There is a puck and a cable. The glasses are light because the computer, battery and storage are in the puck, which is joined to them by a tether [1].

What is not known yet
Where we looked, and what Meta's pages do say
We looked for each of these in Meta's post, product page, games post and developer page, in its post for developers, and in three reports from the event [1], [2], [3], [4], [10], [11], [12], [15].
- 3D video files. Side-by-side (the two eyes' pictures next to each other in one frame), and top-bottom (stacked) are common layouts, and MV-HEVC is a format Apple lists for video playback on Vision Pro [6]. Meta names none of them.
- The computer connection. Meta says a Mac or Windows PC connects "wirelessly or over USB-C" [1]. It does not say whether a 3D picture from the computer is shown in 3D.
- Quest store apps. Meta's post for developers says the glasses "run on the same operating system as Meta Quest, run the same Store and payment platform, and use the same SDKs", and that "Most existing apps should run at parity or better than Quest 3" [12]. Its games post says "every Quest game will be playable on Meta VR Glasses with Touch Plus controllers" [3]. "Most" is not all, and Meta's pages do not go through video player apps one by one.
- Launch day, controllers, light blockers. Meta has given no day. No controller price is in the pages we read. Whether light blockers come in the box is not stated.
Which headset has 3D films to watch?
Apple Vision Pro has studio 3D films on sale today. For the Meta headsets they are announced.
| Headset | Studio 3D films | Controllers |
|---|---|---|
| Meta VR Glasses | Announced: Disney+ in 3D, first 3D catalogs from Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+, films to rent or buy, IMAX Enhanced titles [1] | Not in the box. Eyes, hands and voice by default; Touch Plus sold separately [1], [4] |
| Meta Quest 3 | Disney+ on Quest was 2D only as of December 2025 [14]. Announced for Quest: a rent-or-buy store in the US "later this year" and one 3D concert film in November 2026 [1] | Touch Plus in the box [4] |
| Meta Quest 3S | Same as Quest 3 | Touch Plus in the box [4] |
| Apple Vision Pro | On sale today: 3D films to rent or buy in the Apple TV app [9]; Disney+ in 3D [14] | None in the box [6] |

Every announced film source, with its date where Meta gives one, is in 3D movies on Meta VR Glasses.
What a Quest 3 or 3S already plays today
A Quest 3 or 3S plays films today in three ways:
- Streaming apps on a large virtual screen, in 2D. Disney+ on Quest was 2D only when Road to VR covered its launch in December 2025 [14].
- Your own video files, 3D ones included. A player app does this. Skybox, for example, costs $9.99 and lists side-by-side and top-bottom 3D, and plays from USB devices or from a media server or PC on the same Wi-Fi [16]. The apps are compared in how to watch movies in VR.
- A Windows PC's screen converted to 3D as it plays, with Owl3D Link.
What is new for Quest is studio 3D films. Two things are promised for Quest by name in Meta's post: a store to "rent or buy hundreds of movies later this year on Meta Quest in the US", and the concert film Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour "to buy and rent in 3D on Quest this November" [1]. Meta announced Disney+ in 3D and the Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ catalogs while introducing the glasses, and does not say whether they also come to Quest 3 and 3S [1].
So a Quest owner will learn a good deal before spring: the store and the November Disney+ date both fall this year.
Apps and computer connections on each headset
| Headset | Apps | Computer connection |
|---|---|---|
| Meta VR Glasses | Runs Meta Horizon OS, the Quest's system [4]; more than 75 hand-controlled games at launch, and the Quest catalog with controllers paired [1] | Mac or Windows PC, wirelessly or over USB-C [1]; DisplayPort input on the puck; Quest Link for PC VR [4] |
| Meta Quest 3 | Meta Horizon Store: games, streaming apps [14], video players [16] | Quest Link for PC VR, by cable or Air Link; no display input [4] |
| Meta Quest 3S | Same as Quest 3 | Same as Quest 3 [4] |
| Apple Vision Pro | visionOS apps | Mac Virtual Display, wireless, Mac only [7] |
Should you wait for Meta VR Glasses?
Nobody can tell you yet how the glasses look, because nobody has reviewed a retail unit. The stated facts settle some cases and not others.
Waiting makes sense if:
- Films and video are the main thing you want a headset for, and the stated pixels per degree, the 100 grams and the studio 3D catalogs are worth $1,299.99 to you.
- You already own a Quest 3 or 3S. You lose nothing by waiting: it keeps working, Meta says the store for Quest arrives later this year [1], and UploadVR reports your controllers will pair with the glasses [10].
- You were weighing an Apple Vision Pro mainly for films and are not tied to a Mac or iPhone. The glasses are announced at about $2,200 less [1], [8]. Vision Pro has its 3D film catalog today; the glasses' catalog is a promise until launch.
Buying a Quest now makes sense if:
- You want to watch this week. Meta has given no date beyond spring 2027 [1].
- You want Quest games. A Quest 3 or 3S includes the controllers and has the wider field of view [4].
- Your budget is under $600 [5].
Buying a Vision Pro now makes sense if you want studio 3D films today, use a Mac, and accept $3,499 and 750 to 800 grams on the head [6], [8], [9].
What would change the answer: independent reviews of the picture at 70 degrees, a launch date, a controller price, and Meta saying which 3D catalogs reach Quest.
Whichever you pick: 2D films in 3D
Most films, and nearly all home video, exist only in 2D. Owl3D, the publisher of this guide, makes the software described in this section: Owl3D Link and the Owl3D converter. Both convert a 2D picture to 3D with AI. The result is an AI conversion, not a studio's own 3D version of the film.
Instant, on a Quest today: Owl3D Link. Owl3D Link is an app for Meta Quest headsets. With the Owl3D desktop app running on a Windows PC, it streams the PC's screen to the headset wirelessly, converted from 2D to 3D in real time, as it plays. There is no file to prepare and no waiting. It works from Windows only, not from a Mac.
We expect Owl3D Link to run on Meta VR Glasses, and it has not been tested there, because they are not on sale. The reason: Meta says the glasses run the same operating system and the same Store as Meta Quest, and that most existing apps should run [12], and Owl3D Link is a Quest Store app. It will be tested when the device ships. On a Quest, Owl3D Link can be used with hand gestures alone, without controllers, which matters on glasses that Meta expects most owners to use without them.
Highest quality, from a file: the Owl3D converter. The Owl3D converter is a desktop app for Windows and Mac. It takes a 2D video file you have the right to use and makes a 3D video file from it, on your own computer. It is not instant: you give it a file and it takes time, and gives the best 3D Owl3D makes. StereoGen, its highest-quality model, is coming soon; it is not real time, takes hours to convert a file, and needs an NVIDIA RTX graphics card. Owl3D describes it as "Hollywood-grade 3D at the highest quality". The app has a free tier and paid plans.
Which output to choose for each headset:
| Headset | Converter output | What is known about playing it |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 3, Quest 3S | Side-by-side or half side-by-side | In a player app that lists side-by-side 3D, such as Skybox [16] |
| Apple Vision Pro | Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro (exported on a Mac only) | This is the converter's output made for Apple Vision Pro |
| Meta VR Glasses | Side-by-side, half side-by-side or top-bottom | Not yet known: Meta has not published which layouts the glasses' player opens |
Side-by-side, half side-by-side and top-bottom are ordinary 3D video layouts. Nothing from Owl3D has been tested on the glasses. We will test when they ship.

How much will Meta VR Glasses cost?
$1,299.99 USD, on sale in spring 2027, according to Meta's announcement of September 23, 2026 [1]. Touch Plus controllers and prescription inserts are sold separately [2], [4]; no price for either is in the pages we read. UploadVR reports a bundle with controllers "in some retail channels" [10].
Will my Quest 3 controllers and apps work with Meta VR Glasses?
For the controllers, UploadVR reports that the pair from a Quest 3 or 3S can be paired with the glasses [10]. For apps, Meta says "every Quest game will be playable on Meta VR Glasses with Touch Plus controllers" [3], and its post for developers says "Most existing apps should run at parity or better than Quest 3" [12]. Meta's pages do not say whether purchases on a Quest account carry over, and do not go through non-game apps one by one.
Is a Quest 4 coming?
Meta's September 23, 2026 announcements, as we read them, name no Quest 4 [1], [3]. The same posts promise new things for Quest 3 and 3S: the film store later this year and new games [1], [3]. Anything beyond that is rumor, and this page does not repeat rumors.
Can I wear Meta VR Glasses over my own glasses?
Meta does not say whether they fit over ordinary spectacles. Its product page says: "Add a prescription to your VR Glasses with inserts, sold separately" [2]. Road to VR reports that the inserts come from Meta's partner Zenni Optical [11].
What is the best headset for watching movies right now?
It depends on what you watch and what you own. For studio 3D films on sale today, Apple Vision Pro is the one with a catalog [9], [14]. For the lowest price and your own files, a Quest 3S or Quest 3 [5], [16]. Meta VR Glasses are announced, not on sale, and cannot be judged until they ship and are reviewed.
