Steam Frame vs PS VR2: Which Headset for Your PC?
How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 12 listed at the end.
Short answer
For SteamVR games on a PC, the PS VR2 costs less than half as much and gives an OLED picture over a cable. The Steam Frame costs $1,059 and up. For that you get no cable, eye tracking that works on PC, and games that run on the headset itself [1]. On PC, the PS VR2 loses HDR, eye tracking and all haptics except rumble [7]. If price and black levels matter most, pick the PS VR2. If you want to move freely, play in bed or skip the PC, pick the Steam Frame. Owl3D, the publisher of this guide, makes a 2D-to-3D converter. We sell neither headset and have tested neither: the facts come from Valve, Sony, reviews and dated owner reports.

Key takeaways
- On a PC, the PS VR2 costs about $460 plus a DisplayPort cable. The Steam Frame costs $1,088 with Valve's power supply; see the cost.
- The PS VR2 needs a DisplayPort output on the PC itself. A laptop with only USB-C cannot use it; see what each needs.
- On November 3, 2026, Sony's US store did not list the PS VR2 and showed its PC adapter as "Currently Unavailable". Valve's US page offered the Frame by waitlist only; see the cost.
- For films, the PS VR2 has OLED panels. The Steam Frame needs a 3D player app; see films and 3D video.
The two side by side
| Headset | Price (US) | Panels | Link to the PC | Eye tracking on PC | Without a PC |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Frame | $1,059 (256 GB), $1,299 (1 TB) [1] | LCD, 2160 x 2160 per eye, 72 to 144 Hz (144 Hz experimental) [1] | Wireless, 6 GHz adapter in the box [1] | Yes, for foveated streaming [1] | Yes, games run on the headset [1] |
| PS VR2 | $399.99, plus a $59 adapter [5][6] | OLED, 2000 x 2040 per eye, 90 or 120 Hz [4] | Cable: adapter, DisplayPort 1.4, USB 3.0 [8] | No, not available on PC, says Sony [7] | No, it needs a PC or a PS5 [7] |
Sony gives the PS VR2 a field of view of about 110 degrees [4]. Valve's page gives no figure for the Steam Frame [1]. Valve says the Frame's pancake lenses give "edge-to-edge sharpness and a large eye box" [1]. Sony's spec page names no lens type [4]. Road to VR's reviewer called the Frame "a power-user’s playground": it does more, but takes more tinkering [3].

What each costs on a PC
PS VR2: about $460, plus a cable. Sony cut the headset to $399.99 at its US store in March 2025 [6]. The PC adapter is a separate $59.00 [5]. You also buy a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, which is not in the box [8]. On November 3, 2026, Sony's US store did not list the headset, and it showed the adapter as "Currently Unavailable" [5]. We read those pages from outside the US. Other makers sell adapter boxes. Our PS VR2 on PC guide covers them.
Steam Frame: $1,088. The 256 GB model costs $1,059 and the 1 TB model $1,299, with controllers and the wireless adapter [1]. Valve's $29 power supply is extra [1]. Valve first sold the Frame through a reservation lottery in September 2026 [2]. On November 3, 2026, its US page offered a waitlist only [1].

What each needs from your PC
The PS VR2 needs a Windows 10 or 11 PC [9]. Sony asks for at least a GeForce GTX 1650 or Radeon RX 5500 XT [8]. The cable goes into a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output on the PC itself. Sony says DisplayPort over USB-C does not work with the adapter [8]. You also need Bluetooth 4.0 or later for the controllers [8]. Our PS VR2 on PC guide checks laptops and gives the steps.
The Steam Frame plugs its wireless adapter into the PC [1]. You need no DisplayPort port. For PC games, the PC still does the work and sends the picture to the headset. Without a PC, the Frame plays games on its own Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip [1]. Road to VR found that demanding games are "largely unplayable" in that mode [3].
For games
The PS VR2 has the picture. It has OLED panels [4] and gets the picture over a DisplayPort cable, not over Wi-Fi [8]. One owner who has used both calls the PS VR2's image better (see what owners report). On PC it loses "HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (other than rumble)", by Sony's own words [7].
The Steam Frame has the freedom. There is no cable to the PC. Its eye tracking drives Valve's foveated streaming, which sends the sharpest pixels to where you look [1]. It weighs 435 g, and the battery sits at the back [3]. Its controllers can act as a gamepad, so flat Steam games work too [3]. Road to VR's reviewer averaged 1 to 1.5 hours of battery with mixed use [3]. Its default passthrough view is black and white, at low resolution [3].
For films and 3D video
On both headsets, 3D films and VR180 video play through a player app.
- PS VR2 on PC: it runs SteamVR apps from Steam [9], so the VR video players there work through the PC. Owners who compare it with the LCD Quest 3 praise its blacks and contrast, though one also found it blurrier [12].
- Steam Frame: In December 2025, before launch, Valve said the Frame had no system-level support for stereoscopic 3D content, but that it was "on our list" [10]. Player apps fill that gap, on the headset or streamed from the PC. Valve says the Frame's tracking works in the dark [1], and one owner can "lie in bed with a media app" without lighting the room [11]. Our Steam Frame 3D movies guide lists the apps and the steps.
Got a film that only exists in 2D? Owl3D's converter runs on a Windows PC or Mac. It makes a side-by-side, half side-by-side or top-bottom file from a 2D video you have the right to use. That file plays in a VR player on either headset. It is an AI conversion, not the studio's 3D version, and a full film takes time to convert. The free tier adds no watermark and stops at 60 seconds per conversion.

These are users' posts on Steam's forums. We have not tested them.
- Picture. A Steam Frame owner who has a PS VR2 wrote in October 2026: "the psvr2 IQ is frankly leagues better, even with the small sweet spot" [11]. In October 2026, a sim racer on the Frame forum found that a higher render resolution had sharpened racing games on the PS VR2 but not on the Frame: "I've been trying with the FRAME and I don't get any improvements at all" [11]. The same person says other games look crisp on the Frame. Each is one person's report.
- Performance. Not every PC owner sees a gain from the cable. A PS VR2 owner in September 2024 found modded Skyrim VR "performed noticeably worse than Quest 3 on Virtual Desktop via VDXR" [12].
- Eye tracking. In October 2026 a user said No Man's Sky's beta "just turned on eyetracking and foveated rendering and whoop that works great" on the Frame. On PS VR2 on PC, "the option is there in game it is grayed out" [12]. Three days later, the same user passed on a report that an unofficial driver mod turns on eye tracking in No Man's Sky. See what PS VR2 loses on PC.
Questions people ask
Should I sell my PS VR2 and buy a Steam Frame?
Only if the cable or the lost eye tracking is what bothers you. You would pay about $1,088 and give up OLED. In return you get wireless play, eye tracking on PC, and games without the PC [1][7]. If the PS VR2's picture is why you bought it, note that one owner of both found it better [11].
Does either one work on Linux?
The Steam Frame runs SteamOS 3 [1] and has a full Linux desktop [3]. Sony's PlayStation VR2 App is for Windows 10 or 11 [9]. Users on the PS VR2 App forum report no Sony Linux driver. One points to the Monado drivers for Linux instead [12].
What about a Meta Quest 3?
That is a third route, with wireless or USB-C streaming from the PC. See how to connect a Meta Quest to a PC.
