Sony Spatial Reality Display: Models, Price and What It Plays
How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 12 listed at the end.
Short answer
Sony's glasses-free 3D displays are the Spatial Reality Display line. Two are current: the 27-inch ELF-SR2, a professional display that US dealers listed at $4,750 to $5,000 on November 2, 2026, and the 6-inch ELF-MN1, due to go on sale in Japan only, on December 11, 2026, at 53,900 yen [1][3][8][9][12]. Both follow one viewer's eyes and show 3D from apps built for them: 3D models, design files and characters. Ordinary films and games are not on Sony's list of apps; for side-by-side 3D video, Sony's catalog lists one player, a paid third-party app [5][7]. If you mean the 24-inch PlayStation 3D Display of 2011, that one needs glasses (see below).
Owl3D, the publisher of this guide, makes the Shift, another glasses-free 3D display, described further down. Everything about Sony here comes from Sony's own pages, two US dealers and dated press reports. We give no opinion on how either looks.

Key takeaways
- Two current models: the 27-inch ELF-SR2 for studios and the 6-inch ELF-MN1 for characters on a desk, Japan only for now; see which is which.
- They show apps and 3D models, not your film library. Side-by-side video needs a paid player; see what it plays.
- For the ELF-SR2, Sony recommends a Windows 11 PC with an RTX 2070 SUPER-class card or better; see what you need.
- 3D is for one viewer at a time on both; see limits.
Which Sony 3D display is which
Sony's XYN site lists two Spatial Reality Displays as products today, the ELF-MN1 and the ELF-SR2 [1]. The earlier 15.6-inch ELF-SR1 is no longer in that list, though Sony's user guide still gives its PC requirements [1][2].
| Model | Size and picture | Who it is for | Where and price |
|---|---|---|---|
| ELF-SR2 | 27 in, 3840 x 2160 [3][4]; 400 nits, 1000:1 [4] | Professionals; Sony's case studies are in medicine, live-show design and a museum [1] | $4,750 at CDW, $5,000 at Filmtools, November 2, 2026 [3][12] |
| ELF-MN1 | 6 in, 1080 x 2160 effective in 3D; 470 nits, 1350:1 [10] | Avatars, characters and 3D content on a desk [8] | Japan only; 53,900 yen at Sony Store, on sale December 11, 2026 [8][9] |
| ELF-SR1 (earlier) | 15.6 in [4] | Professional | Not in Sony's product list [1]; $5,000, by Digital Trends in 2023 [4] |
| PlayStation 3D Display (2011) | 24 in, 1080p, needs 3D glasses [11] | PS3 gamers | A 2011 PS3 product; not glasses-free |

What it shows in 3D, and what it plays
The ELF-SR2 shows 3D that a computer draws in real time. Sony says "You can develop applications using various game engines and graphics libraries", with plug-ins for Unity and Unreal Engine [1]. Sony's App Select catalog lists what runs on it [5]:
- 3D models. Sony's free Spatial Reality Display Player shows models in FBX, OBJ, GLTF and STL [6].
- Your own 3D work. Preview plug-ins for Blender, Maya, 3ds Max and ZBrush [5].
- Medical scans and CAD. DICOM viewers, a CAD and BIM viewer and point-cloud tools [5].
- Side-by-side or top-bottom 3D video. Through SRD Movie Player, a paid third-party app and the only stereo video player in the catalog. It "can read stereo video files in Side by Side or Top and Bottom format" on the ELF-SR1 and ELF-SR2 [7].
On November 2, 2026, Sony's catalog listed no film service, no Blu-ray playback, no PC games and no 2D-to-3D conversion for these displays [5].
The ELF-MN1 is aimed at characters and avatars. It connects to a phone or a Windows PC with one USB-C cable, plays 3D content in compatible phone apps, and has a Unity SDK and OpenXR support [8][9][10]. Sony's ELF-MN1 pages do not say it plays 3D video files.
What you need
ELF-SR2. Sony's recommended PC: Windows 11, a 6-core Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or better, 16 GB of memory, and an HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C output that carries 4K at 60 Hz [2]. Sony warns that "the frame rate may drop significantly depending on the content" [2]. Sony lists no Mac.
ELF-MN1. The same Windows 11 PC class with a USB-C video output, or one of the phones Sony lists: recent Xperia 1 and 5 models, Galaxy S23 to S26, Pixel 10 and 11, and iPhone 15 to 18 [10]. The AC adapter is sold separately [8].
Limits
- One viewer. Sony's ELF-MN1 specification gives one as the number of viewers [10]. Of the ELF-SR2, Digital Trends wrote that the 3D fails "when a second person tries to see the effect" [4].
- Distance and light. The ELF-SR2 works from 50 to 100 cm and the ELF-MN1 from 30 to 80 cm [2][10]. The ELF-SR2's eye tracking needs a room lit at 100 to 1,000 lux [2].
- Content. You get what an app was built to show. Sony's catalog has no film, streaming or game apps [5].
- Price and region. US dealers list the ELF-SR2 at $4,750 to $5,000 [3][12]. Sony says the ELF-MN1 "is currently available only in Japan" [8].
If you want films and games in 3D on your desk
The Owl3D Shift is a 14-inch glasses-free 3D display that sits beside your computer. Like Sony's, it tracks your eyes and shows 3D to one viewer at a time. Unlike Sony's, it is built for what you already watch and play:
- Any window in 3D, instantly. Drag a video, a browser or a game onto it and the Owl3D app converts it from 2D to 3D as it plays. This is an AI conversion, not a film's own 3D version. Multiplayer and anti-cheat games often block screen capture, and then it cannot convert them.
- 3D files you have. It shows Full SBS, Half SBS and top-bottom video playing in your own media player in 3D.
- What it needs. A Windows PC with an NVIDIA RTX 30 series card or newer, or a Mac with Apple silicon (macOS 15.5 or later).
- Its trade-offs. 14 inches, 60 Hz, 1920 x 2160 per eye in 3D, and nothing in 3D without the computer and the Owl3D app.

The PlayStation 3D Display
When people search "Sony 3D monitor", many mean this one. Sony's 24-inch PlayStation 3D Display came out in 2011 for the PS3. It uses active-shutter glasses, one pair in the box, and shows 3D at full 1080p [11]. Its SimulView mode let two players each see their own full screen through glasses, in three PS3 games [11]. It has two HDMI inputs and no apps [11]. It is not glasses-free. For glasses-based 3D on a TV, see 3D glasses for TV.
FAQ
Can the Sony Spatial Reality Display play 3D movies?
Not with Sony's own software. Side-by-side and top-bottom 3D files play on the ELF-SR1 and ELF-SR2 through SRD Movie Player, a paid third-party app [7]. Sony's catalog lists no 3D Blu-ray or streaming playback [5].
Does it work with a Mac?
Sony lists no Mac. For both models, its recommended PC runs Windows 11 [2][10]. The ELF-MN1 also works with listed iPhone and Android phones [10].
Can two people see the 3D at once?
No. Sony's ELF-MN1 specification gives one viewer [10]. Digital Trends reported that the ELF-SR2's 3D fails for a second person [4]. For a display several people see in 3D at once, read about Looking Glass.
Can I buy the ELF-MN1 in the US?
Not now. Sony says it is "currently available only in Japan" [8], and has given no US date.
