What "Digital 3D" Means on a Movie Listing

Updated

How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 7 listed at the end.

Short answer

"Digital 3D" is a general label, not a brand and not a special version of the film. Fandango, a US ticket site whose listings carry the label, defines it as a showing "where three-dimensional images are projected digitally" [1]. To learn which 3D system the theater uses, look for a logo beside the label. On the two Fandango pages we read in October 2026, 16 of the 20 listings marked "Digital 3D" also carried the RealD 3D logo: the regular 3D showing, with polarized glasses. If you came for 3D films to watch, see new 3D movies in theaters or how to watch 3D movies at home.

Key takeaways

What Fandango means by "Digital 3D"

On a Fandango showtimes page, each group of showtimes has a format heading, such as "Standard" or "3D", and under it a line of small print: "Digital 3D, Reserved seating, No passes" and so on [1]. Press that line, which ends in a small "i", and a panel called "Amenities Details" explains each word. For this one it says:

"Digital 3D describes presentations where three-dimensional images are projected digitally." [1]

That is all the label promises: the film is in 3D and the projector is digital. Wikipedia describes the term the same way, as "a non-specific 3D standard", and lists Dolby 3D, XpanD 3D, Panavision 3D, MasterImage 3D and IMAX 3D among the "competing digital 3D formats" [3]. RealD says of itself that it "pioneered digital 3D cinema" [4].

Digital 3D vs RealD 3D

They are not two versions to choose between. "Digital 3D" is the general term, and RealD 3D is one company's system for doing it. Fandango describes RealD as "the most widely used digital 3D cinema technology" [1]. On the pages we read, one showing often carried both.

On October 11, 2026 we read Fandango's listings for one film, Avengers: Doomsday, on one date, December 18, 2026, near New York (ZIP code 10004) and near Plano, Texas (75024) [1][2]. This is how its 3D showings were labelled from theater to theater.

Of the 20 groups of showtimes marked "Digital 3D" on the two pages, 16 carried the RealD 3D logo [1][2]. Two near New York carried the name of a special auditorium instead: a ScreenX logo at Regal Union Square, and the words "PRIME 3D at AMC" at AMC Empire 25 [1]. The two near Plano carried no logo at all [2], and we could not find out which 3D system those two theaters use.

The same film was labelled differently by theater. Near New York, all 11 Regal theaters had "Digital 3D" in the small print of their 3D showings, and 18 AMC theaters showed the RealD 3D logo without those words [1].

That is what two pages showed on one day. It is not a rule for every theater. AMC's, Regal's and Cinemark's own websites did not open for us, so we cannot say how each chain words it on its own site.

Digital 3D vs IMAX 3D and Dolby 3D

"Digital 3D" is not IMAX. On the pages we read, IMAX and Dolby Cinema showings sat under the heading "Premium Format" with their own logos, apart from the "3D" group, and none of them was marked "Digital 3D" [1][2].

None of them was a 3D showing either. Neither page had an IMAX 3D or a Dolby Cinema 3D showing, so we cannot show you how Fandango labels one. What IMAX 3D and Dolby 3D are, and how to choose, is in RealD 3D vs IMAX 3D: which showing to book.

Do you need glasses for Digital 3D?

Yes, where the listing shows the RealD 3D logo: a RealD audience wears circularly polarized glasses, so that each eye sees only its own picture [5]. Fandango describes them as "just like sunglasses" and "recyclable" [6].

Where the listing says "Digital 3D" with no logo, it does not say which glasses you will get. Not every system uses RealD's kind: Dolby 3D glasses have color filters in the lenses, and Wikipedia says they "are not considered disposable" [7]. The kinds are set out in types of 3D glasses.

Does Digital 3D cost more?

The Fandango pages we read showed no ticket prices, so we give no figure. For one film's prices by format, see the comparison table in our RealD 3D guide.

How to find out which 3D your showing is

  1. Open the showtime on Fandango and find the 3D group. Look at the line of small print under the heading.
  2. Look for a logo above the small print. A RealD 3D logo means RealD 3D. On the pages we read, the IMAX and Dolby Cinema logos were under "Premium Format", not here.
  3. Press the line of small print. The "Amenities Details" panel explains every word on that listing [1].
  4. No logo? Ask the theater which 3D system that auditorium uses, if the kind of glasses matters to you.
Fandango's Amenities Details panel: a RealD 3D logo with the sentence RealD is the most widely used digital 3D cinema technology, then the heading Digital 3D with the sentence Digital 3D describes presentations where three-dimensional images are projected digitally.

Frequently asked questions

Is Digital 3D the same as Disney Digital 3D?

No. By Wikipedia's account, "Disney Digital 3-D" is a phrase Disney trademarked to promote Chicken Little, released in 2005, which it showed in 3D in the United States with RealD [3].

Can I buy a "digital 3D movie" to watch at home?

That is a different thing from the label on a theater listing. For 3D films sold for home viewing, see which of 2026's 3D films reach home in 3D.
