What Is Odeon iSense? iSense vs IMAX, Dolby Cinema and Price

Updated

How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 12 listed at the end.

Short answer

iSense is Odeon's own premium screen [2]: a large floor-to-ceiling screen, 4K projection and Dolby Atmos sound [1][3][4]. It is not IMAX and not Dolby Cinema. Odeon runs those two as partners, beside iSense [2]. An iSense ticket costs more than a standard one [9][10]. The extra buys the bigger screen, the 4K picture and the Atmos sound [1]. IMAX's largest screens and Dolby Cinema's laser projection are different formats [6][7].

Key takeaways

iSense vs IMAX vs Dolby Cinema

All three are premium large formats: a bigger screen and better picture and sound than a standard screen. The difference is who makes the system and what is in it.

FormatWhose systemProjectionScreen3D glasses
Odeon iSenseOdeon's own brand [2]4K [1]Floor to ceiling [4]. 11.5 m wide at Epsom [3], about 15 m at Orpington [5]RealD where the screen shows 3D [5][9]
IMAXIMAX Corporation [6]"IMAX with Laser": two 4K laser projectors. Older digital IMAX: two 2K projectors [6]With laser: the tall 1.43:1 shape, on screens 36 m wide or more. Digital IMAX in converted multiplex screens: 1.90:1 [6]Colour-filter glasses with laser, polarized with digital IMAX [6]
Dolby CinemaDolby Laboratories [7]Two Christie 4K laser projectors (Dolby Vision) [7]Not statedColour-filter glasses (Dolby 3D) [7]

iSense vs IMAX. IMAX's own screens are usually the larger ones. A viewer on Cinema Treasures who knows both formats reviewed the Orpington iSense screen in October 2018. The viewer wrote that its screen was "sufficiently large, but not in the “giant” category as found in the BFI IMAX" [5]. They found the picture "not far off that achieved by IMAX’s proprietary dual-projection systems", "but still, the IMAX systems appear to be superior" [5]. This is one viewer's report from 2018. We have not compared them ourselves.

Not every IMAX is large. Since 2008, IMAX has also put its brand on converted multiplex screens, and some critics call those "Lie-MAX" [6]. Check the screen size on the cinema's own page before you pay for either.

iSense vs Dolby Cinema. Both use Dolby Atmos sound [1][7]. Dolby Cinema adds Dolby Vision laser projection. That system can deliver up to 48 cd/m² in 3D and 106 cd/m² in 2D [7]. We found no brightness figure for iSense. The UK's first Dolby Cinema opened at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in 2018 [2].

Why does iSense exist at all? In 2017, Screen Daily reported that chains launched their own brands "so as to avoid paying overheads to market leader Imax" [11]. It also wrote that the future of iSense "must be in doubt" [11]. Nine years later, iSense still runs at 19 or more UK cinemas [8].

What iSense costs, and is it worth it

An iSense ticket costs more than a standard one. An undated venue guide says so for Odeon Luxe Edinburgh West [9]. We could not confirm today's surcharge on Odeon's own site, so check the price when you book.

  • myLIMITLESS. The standard card covers standard seats. You pay an upgrade for "IMAX screenings, iSense, Dolby" [10]. myLIMITLESS Plus adds "infinite premium screen upgrades to iSense and 3D" [10]. These terms come from a student guide updated in December 2025, not from Odeon.

The upgrade buys three things over a standard screen: a larger screen, 4K projection and Atmos sound [1]. If the largest screen is what you want, IMAX with laser can fill screens 36 m wide or more [6], against 11.5 m to about 15 m for the iSense screens above [3][5]. With myLIMITLESS Plus, iSense costs nothing extra [10].

Which Odeon cinemas have iSense

This list comes from the cinema listings on Flicks, not from Odeon. These 19 Odeon cinemas showed films tagged "ISENSE" on 3 November 2026 [8]:

Region Odeon cinemas with iSense showings
London and South East Acton, Uxbridge, Orpington, Epsom, Luxe Lee Valley
South West Bournemouth BH2
Midlands Luxe Leicester, Luxe Derby, Luxe Birmingham Broadway Plaza, Luxe Nuneaton, Tamworth, Luxe Stafford
North of England Luxe Warrington, Northwich Barons Quay, Oldham, Luxe Hull
Scotland Luxe Glasgow, Luxe Edinburgh West, Luxe Dundee

Last checked : Flicks listings, 28 Odeon cinema pages.

This list may be incomplete. It covers the 28 Odeon cinemas we looked up on Flicks, not every Odeon. A cinema can have an iSense screen and show nothing in it that day. Odeon's own cinema pages may not say it either. In 2018, one viewer found no mention of iSense on Odeon's page for Milton Keynes. The viewer found it only in the iSense list on Odeon's site [12].

Is iSense 3D?

No. iSense is not a 3D format. The "3D" in Odeon's "Dolby ATMOS 3D sound" is about the sound [1][3]. Dolby Atmos is a 3-D surround sound format [7], with sound that moves "above, behind and all around you" [4].

An iSense screen can show 3D films. The Orpington screens use RealD for 3D [5]. At Edinburgh West, all screens have RealD 3D [9]. On 3 November 2026, none of the 19 cinemas above listed a 3D showing [8].

Frequently asked questions

Is iSense the same as Odeon Luxe?

No. Luxe is Odeon's cinema with recliner seats in every screen [3]. iSense is the premium screen inside some of them [3]. Flicks lists some iSense cinemas without the Luxe name, such as Acton and Orpington [8].

What does "LASER" next to iSense mean?

Is iSense IMAX?

No. Odeon names iSense as its own brand, beside its partnerships with IMAX and Dolby [2].
