What Is Cineworld Superscreen? Superscreen vs IMAX, a Normal Screen and Price

Updated

How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 20 listed at the end.

Short answer

Superscreen is Cineworld's own premium screen. You get a larger screen, Dolby Atmos sound and, in Cineworld's words, "state-of-the-art projection" [1]. It is not IMAX. A Superscreen ticket costs a little more than a standard one [2]. With an Unlimited card it is free after three months of membership, or from sign-up if you pay 12 months upfront. Before that it costs £3 [2]. How big the screen is depends on the cinema [12][14].

Key takeaways

  • Superscreen is a Cineworld brand. IMAX is a film format made by another company, IMAX Corporation [4][20]. See Superscreen vs IMAX.
  • Screen sizes differ a lot by site: 22 m wide at The O2, 17 m at Hull [12][14]. See Superscreen vs a normal screen.
  • Unlimited members on a monthly plan pay £3 for Superscreen in their first three months, then nothing. IMAX costs Unlimited members £5 [2][3]. See what it costs.
  • "Superscreen 2D" on a listing is a 2D showing. Superscreen is not a 3D format. See is Superscreen 3D?

Superscreen vs IMAX

Both cost a little more than a standard ticket [2][3]. The difference is who sets the rules. Superscreen is "Exclusive to Cineworld" [1]. IMAX is a system of cameras, projectors and cinemas from IMAX Corporation [4][20]. Its screens have a tall 1.43:1 or 1.9:1 shape [4].

Which one to book. If the film was shot for IMAX, the IMAX showing can have more picture at the top and bottom. Our guide on IMAX vs 3D explains how to tell. For other films, the choice is about screen size, sound and price at your cinema.

At Leicester Square the two screens sit back to back [9]. One viewer who knows both rooms wrote in April 2025 that the Superscreen is "not a match for overwhelming scale and special qualities of the IMAX" [11]. In the same post, the viewer called it "certainly one of the better places to see a film" [11]. That is one viewer's report. We have not compared the two ourselves.

Superscreen vs a normal screen

Cineworld promises a film experience "clearer, more vivid and more detailed than your standard cinema screen" [1]. Its press releases describe a "wall-to-wall and ceiling-high screen" with laser 4K projection and Dolby Atmos [14][15]. The size of that screen depends on the room:

At The O2, the cinema's manager called it "the largest screen in the UK – not counting the BFI IMAX" in 2019 [13]. Not every Superscreen is that large.

What people who went say

These reports come from members of Cinema Treasures, a site for cinema enthusiasts, and one blogger. We have not tested any of these screens.

  • Size varies. In June 2018, a member called the O2 screen "worthy of the name SUPERSCREEN imo. Many other SUPERSCREENs are not." [12]
  • The sound. A visitor to The O2 in August 2023 wrote: "Picture bright and clear on the large screen" and "The Dolby Atmos sound sounded really good." [17] In 2018, another member said they noticed no sound from the overhead Atmos speakers on their visits [12].
  • Worth the trip. An Unlimited member from Rugby, whose own cinema has no Superscreen, saw a film at The O2 in June 2026. "The screen itself was incredibly impressive," the member wrote [16].

What Superscreen costs

Cineworld's help centre says a Superscreen showing has "a slightly higher ticket price than a standard screening" [2]. It does not give a figure. Prices are on each cinema's own page, which we could not open.

  • Unlimited card, first three months, paying monthly: £3 per Superscreen ticket [2].
  • Unlimited card after three months, or paid 12 months upfront: free [2].
  • For comparison: IMAX costs Unlimited members £5 more [3].

Unlimited members can also pay a separate uplift at a cinema in a higher price group than their card. One member paid that at The O2 and wrote that there was "no additional charge specifically for the Superscreen itself" [16].

Which Cineworld cinemas have Superscreen

Cineworld keeps its list of Superscreen cinemas on its main website [3]. We could not open that page, so the list below comes from other sources. In 2022, Hull was "Cineworld’s 18th in the UK" [14]. These cinemas are named as having a Superscreen in the sources we could read:

Hull Cineworld announcement, 2022 [14]
Hemel Hempstead Cinema Treasures members, 2018 [18]

This list is incomplete, and some entries are years old. Check the format on your cinema's listing before you book.

The Leicester Square Superscreen is Screen 9 [9]. It opened in May 2014 as Empire Cinemas' "IMPACT" screen and took the Superscreen name after Cineworld bought the cinema [9]. It has Dolby Atmos with 87 JBL speakers [9].

In November 2024, Barco and Cineworld added "HDR by Barco" projection to this screen, starting with Gladiator II on 22 November [10]. Barco said its highlights are "over 6x brighter than traditional projection" [10]. It was the first HDR by Barco screen outside the US [10].

Is Superscreen 3D?

No. Superscreen is not a 3D format. It is a screen and sound upgrade [1]. "2D" in a listing such as "Superscreen 2D" means the film is shown flat, without glasses.

Some Superscreens show 3D films. Cineworld's announcements for Didsbury and Hull promised laser 4K projection "giving a brighter 3D experience" [14][15]. Cineworld offers RealD 3D, with polarized glasses, in selected screens at all its cinemas [6]. The glasses cost £1.25 a pair, online or at the cinema [7].

Frequently asked questions

Is Superscreen the same as IMAX?

No. Superscreen is Cineworld's own brand [1]. IMAX is a separate format with its own screens [4]. See Superscreen vs IMAX.

Does Infinity Vision replace Superscreen?

No. Cineworld says Superscreen "stays exactly as it is" [8]. Infinity Vision is a certification on top, and the usual Superscreen uplift still applies [8]. More in what is Infinity Vision.

Which is better, 4DX or Superscreen?

They are different upgrades. Superscreen gives you a larger screen and Dolby Atmos [1]. 4DX adds moving seats and effects such as wind and water. Our guide to 4DX explains more.

Is Superscreen the same as Odeon iSense?

No. Each is one chain's own premium screen. Odeon's is iSense.
