IMAX vs 3D: what is the difference, and what is IMAX 3D?
How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 15 listed at the end.
Short answer
No, IMAX is not 3D. IMAX is a kind of auditorium, built around a very large screen with its own projectors and sound [1][2], and it plays a film in 2D or in 3D [1]. 3D is a way of showing a film with depth, through glasses, on a regular screen or on an IMAX one. "IMAX 3D" is a 3D showing in an IMAX auditorium. A listing that says "IMAX" with no "3D" is a 2D showing.

What "IMAX" on a ticket means: the auditorium and its screen, whether the film plays in 2D or in 3D. This one is in Berlin. Photo: NutzerAusBerlin, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons.
Key takeaways
- One film can play four ways: regular 2D, regular 3D, IMAX and IMAX 3D. See the four showings.
- On a listing, look for the word "3D". An IMAX showing without it is in 2D. See how to read a listing.
- IMAX 3D adds depth and glasses; the one report we found, from 2018, has it dimmer than IMAX in 2D. See which to book.
- Some films are shot to show more picture on IMAX screens only. See Filmed For IMAX.
The four showings of one film
"IMAX" names the auditorium. "3D" names how the film is shown. The two combine into four showings.
| Showing | Screen | What you wear | What the ticket adds | Is the film made for it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular 2D | A regular auditorium | Nothing | Nothing: almost always the cheapest, The Seattle Times wrote in 2024 [5] | Every film |
| Regular 3D (RealD or another digital 3D) | A regular auditorium; RealD uses a silver screen [6] | 3D glasses [5] | More than 2D: the same 2024 article speaks of the extra money for 3D [5] | Only a film released in 3D. Most are converted to 3D after shooting, by the same article [5] |
| IMAX, with no "3D" | An IMAX auditorium | Nothing | An IMAX premium: AMC's 2025 annual report speaks of the "price premium" of IMAX [2] | Any film IMAX plays; some are labelled Filmed For IMAX [4][7] |
| IMAX 3D | The same IMAX auditorium | 3D glasses; which kind depends on the projector, by Wikipedia's account [1] | The IMAX premium [2] | A film released in 3D |
We give no dollar amounts. AMC's, Regal's and Cinemark's own format pages would not open for us, and prices differ by theater; the price is on each showtime before you pay. What RealD 3D is, how it compares with IMAX 3D and Dolby 3D, and one film's four ticket prices side by side are in RealD 3D vs IMAX 3D.
3D screens far outnumber IMAX ones. AMC's annual report counts 2,795 3D-enabled screens and 186 IMAX screens in its United States theaters on December 31, 2025 [2]. RealD says it has "the world’s largest 3D cinema platform with more than 22,000 installed screens in 72 countries" [8].
How to tell from a listing which one it is
Here is a real one: Fandango's page for AMC Mesa Grand 14 in Mesa, Arizona, with the showtimes for Saturday, October 10, 2026 [9]. It grouped each film's showtimes under "Standard", "3D" or "Premium Format", with the auditorium's features on the line below. Pan's Labyrinth 20th Anniversary had a "3D" group and a "Standard" group. Digger had a "Standard" group and a "Premium Format" group that read "IMAX with Laser", and no "3D" group: IMAX, in 2D.
- Find the word "3D". On that page the 3D showtimes sat under a "3D" heading [9]. Under it, the showing is in 3D and you wear glasses. With no "3D" heading, as for Digger, it is in 2D.
- Find the word "IMAX". On that page it read "IMAX with Laser", under "Premium Format", for three films, none of them with a "3D" heading [9]. No IMAX 3D showing was on that page, so we cannot show you how one is labelled.
- Use the format filter. The Fandango page had filters for "IMAX", "DOLBY CINEMA" and "3D" [9].
- Check which IMAX it is. Open the theater's page on imax.com and read the amenities. When we read the page for AMC Mesa Grand 14, it listed "IMAX with Laser" [10].
IMAX or 3D: which showing to book
The rule we would use:
- Book IMAX, in 2D, when the film is labelled Filmed For IMAX, when you do not want glasses, or when you want the brighter picture. As Display Daily, a trade publication, reported in May 2018 after a visit to IMAX, the company specified its 2D picture at 22 foot-lamberts, 60 percent above the cinema specification of 14 [3].
- Book regular 3D when the depth is what you are going for and IMAX 3D is not offered, or IMAX means a long drive.
- Book IMAX 3D when it is offered and you want the big screen and the depth together. The same 2018 report gives 11 foot-lamberts "to the eye" for 3D on IMAX's one-projector laser system, on the word of IMAX's David Keighley [3]: half its 2D figure.
The rule is ours, and it comes from that report's figures, not from our own viewing. They are eight years old and are Display Daily's, not a statement on IMAX's site: the IMAX pages we opened in October 2026 give no brightness figures.
What people who saw more than one say
These are three viewers' own words, not our findings, and they are old: 2012 and 2015, before IMAX's one-projector laser system.
- IMAX 3D over regular 3D and 2D, May 2012. Rob Buckley saw Avengers Assemble in 2D, in 3D and in IMAX 3D, and wrote on his blog of IMAX 3D: "Shock, horror, it beat 2D. I think to a certain extent that’s because it was IMAX rather than because it was 3D." Of regular 3D he noted "the overall reduced colour and darkness of 3D" [11].
- IMAX 2D over IMAX 3D, July 2015. Two members of Blu-ray Forum. One: "Imax has great 3D, but I think the image loses a little bit of brightness and clarity, so overall I prefer 2D Imax." The other, who had seen Tron: Legacy in IMAX 3D: "For me, I would rather see IMAX 2D over 3D anyday." [12]
Filmed For IMAX: when the IMAX showing has more picture
For some films, the IMAX showing has picture that no other showing has. IMAX's page on its Filmed For IMAX program says filmmakers shoot "with IMAX's 1.90:1 or 1.43:1 aspect ratios in mind, using expanded scenes that open vertically to fill the entire IMAX screen" [4]. For Venom: The Last Dance, its news item of October 2024 promised 40 minutes of footage with 26 percent more picture, on IMAX screens only [13].
This differs from film to film. On October 11, 2026, the part of imax.com's film list that loaded for us, outside the United States, showed "FILMED FOR IMAX" beside The Odyssey and Dune: Part Three, and not beside Digger [7]. The label is about the picture's shape, not about 3D.
Is IMAX 3D the same as regular 3D?
It is the same film's 3D, on the IMAX screen. The IMAX pages we opened do not describe its 3D, so the detail below is Wikipedia's and a 2018 trade report's, not IMAX's own statement. By both, the glasses depend on the projector:
- Two-projector IMAX, by Wikipedia's account, uses one projector for each eye in 3D. The older digital system has linear-polarized glasses; two-projector IMAX with Laser has filter glasses "similar to those used by Dolby 3D" [1].
- One-projector IMAX with Laser, as Display Daily reported in May 2018, is for screens up to 80 feet wide and "uses circular polarization"; IMAX's David Keighley told it the projector had "an integrated Zscreen, the 3D add-on system from RealD" [3].
Wear the glasses that theater hands you for that showing.
Frequently asked questions
Can a film play in 3D and in IMAX, but not in IMAX 3D?
One person found exactly that. In November 2017, someone looking for Justice League showtimes wrote on Movies & TV Stack Exchange of finding "regular 2D, IMAX 2D, and RealD 3D" and no IMAX 3D showtimes [14]. That is one person's report, nine years old, and we have not checked it. Read the listing for your own theater.
Can I see a film in IMAX without the 3D?
Only if the theater schedules an IMAX showing with no "3D" on it. The person who started the 2015 forum thread above wanted exactly that, and wrote: "Fast & Furious 7 was in 2D IMAX here by me!" and "Everything else is 3D only!" [12]. The 2026 listing above shows the opposite case: its IMAX showings carried no "3D" [9].
Does 3D cause headaches or nausea?
A 2013 study gave 497 healthy adults a sickness questionnaire before and after a 2D and a 3D film at a cinema. Its summary: "Viewers reporting some sickness (SSQ total score>15) were 54.8% of the total sample after the 3D movie compared to 14.1% of total sample after the 2D movie." [15] The study does not mention IMAX.
