Avatar 3D Blu-ray: Every US Edition of the Three Films

The US 3D sets of the first two films: the 2023 remaster of Avatar (left) and Avatar: The Way of Water. Cover images: Disney, via Blu-ray.com (Avatar, The Way of Water).

The five US editions

Dates and contents are as Blu-ray.com lists them. The 3D score is the mark out of 5 that its reviewer gave the 3D picture: one reviewer's mark, not an average.

Last checked October 11, 2026: dates, contents and scores on Blu-ray.com.

Blu-ray.com marks all five "Region free", meaning not tied to players from one part of the world [1][2][3][4][5]. None is a 4K 3D disc: every one is listed at 1080p [1][2][3][4][5].

Avatar (2009): three 3D editions, and which to buy

The 2023 remaster is the only one of the three we found listed new at a named shop (below), and the only one with a 2D disc of its own and a bonus disc. If you own an older one: two reviewers found the remaster's 3D slightly better, and two forum members disagree about the picture.

The two older editions hold the same disc. The 2010 one came only with Panasonic 3D hardware [2]. Blu-ray.com's reviewer wrote that the 2012 release "is identical to the version previously bundled with Panasonic 3D gear" [3]. Neither has bonus features; the 2012 set adds only a DVD [2][3].

What the remaster adds. A 2D Blu-ray of its own and a bonus disc: Home Theater Forum's Todd Erwin describes "movie-only 3D and 2D Blu-ray discs and a dedicated special features Blu-ray" [6]. Its picture comes from the version that was upscaled and remastered in 4K under James Cameron's supervision [6].

How much better the 3D is. Slightly, by the two reviews we read. Erwin scored the 3D 5 out of 5 and called it "marginally better than the previous hybrid 2D/3D release from 2012" [6]. Blu-ray.com's Jeffrey Kauffman: "This new version may not be markedly different, but it does show some interesting new depth and dimensionality" [1].

Which cut. Only the re-release cut, in which, as Erwin describes it, Parker Selfridge now warns "This isn’t over" as the humans leave Pandora [6]. He adds that "the special edition and extended edition cuts are not included", and that the 2010 set with all three cuts was "all in 2D" [6].

Sound. DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Kauffman notes the disc "does not include the Dolby Atmos tracks that are on the 4K releases" [1].

What people report about the remaster

Three people, in their own words; the two forum members disagree. We have not compared the discs ourselves.

• A Blu-ray Forum member, April 2026: "The difference in image quality is almost imperceptible unless you know exactly what to look for", and "There is also no difference in 3D quality" [7].
• Another member replied the same day that this was "Surprising to hear", having had "to remove the sharpness boost just for this movie because it looked very digital and over processed" [7].
• A YouTube commenter who had bought it, about 2024: a side-by-side comparison video "confirms my suspicion that this edition is barely different from the original 3d disc" [8].

The Way of Water and Fire and Ash

Avatar: The Way of Water has one US 3D edition, with the film in 3D "split across two Blu-ray discs to maximize bitrates" [9], a 2D disc and a bonus disc [4]. Erwin scored its 3D 5 out of 5 [9]. Kauffman gave it 4.5 and called it "a really superb presentation for the most part" [4]. The sound is DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 [4].

In a January 2025 poll in a Facebook group of 3D Blu-ray collectors, 78% chose "I have it, and it's one of the best 3D blu-rays I own" and 3% chose "I have it, but it wasn't worth the money" [10]. The page did not show how many voted.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the newest. Kauffman scored its 3D 4.0, wrote that it "may be a slight step down from that experienced with Avatar: The Way of Water 3D", and saw "one pretty major incidence of crosstalk very early on" [5]; crosstalk is a faint double image. Its 4K editions, the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest are covered in Avatar in 3D at home.

Where each set was listed new on October 11, 2026

Last checked October 11, 2026: prices and stock.

Orbit DVD's Avatar listing is a "Three-disc set" [11], which matches the remaster. A second shop, Blurays For Everyone, listed The Way of Water "New & Sealed" at $32.99 [14]. The Amazon figures were read on Blu-ray.com, not on Amazon's own pages, and we read every page from outside the US. Check the shop's page before you buy.

For the 2010 and 2012 editions, Blu-ray.com showed no "Amazon:" price line that day, only "New from" or "Used from" lines [2][3]. We print no prices for those.

What plays them

A Blu-ray player that supports Blu-ray 3D, a 3D TV or 3D projector, and the glasses for that display: see what you need to play a 3D Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray players in 2026. A PlayStation 5 will not do it. Sony's FAQ: "No, 3D stereoscopic output is not supported on PS5" [15]. For a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One, see which consoles play 3D Blu-ray.

No 3D TV or projector? The other ways to watch are in Avatar in 3D at home.

Frequently asked questions

What frame rate is The Way of Water 3D Blu-ray?

Home Theater Forum's review says the disc holds "the 24-frame 3D version" [9]. The same review says the film's premium theater showings used 48 frames per second for certain shots [9].

Is there a 3D Blu-ray set with all three films?

Not in Blu-ray.com's US listing. Its US search for "avatar 3d" returned five entries on October 11, 2026, the five in the table above, and none is a collection [17]. We did not check other countries.
