Animated Movies in 3D: Ten Discs Rated, and Where to Watch

Updated

How we researched this: written by Owl3D from published sources, all 16 listed at the end.

Short answer

Six animated films have a 3D Blu-ray on which Blu-ray.com's reviewers scored the 3D 5 out of 5: Toy Story 3, The LEGO Movie, Monsters University, Wreck-It Ralph, Tangled and the 1991 Beauty and the Beast. All six came out in the US; a 3D Blu-ray needs a 3D player and a 3D TV or projector. The other route is an Apple Vision Pro headset: Apple's guide says 3D movies can be bought and rented in the Apple TV app, and Disney said in January 2024 that Disney+ would show films in 3D on it. Here "3D" means stereoscopic 3D, a separate picture for each eye, as in a 3D theater. If you meant computer-animated films, as opposed to hand-drawn ones, this is a different list. Owl3D, the publisher of this guide, makes the Shift, named once below as a route for a film with no 3D version.

Key takeaways

  • Of ten discs whose reviews we read, six get the reviewer's top 3D score and four get 4 or 4.5. See the ten, with US release dates.
  • Animated 3D is watched from a 3D Blu-ray, or on an Apple Vision Pro headset. See where to watch.
  • Owners do not all agree with the reviewers, above all on Tangled. See what owners say.
  • A film with no 3D version can be converted as it plays; that is an AI conversion, not the studio's 3D. See the last section.

Ten animated 3D Blu-rays, by the reviewer's 3D score

The 3D score is the mark out of 5 that Blu-ray.com's reviewer gave the 3D picture on the US disc. It is one reviewer's mark for the 3D, not for the film. Scores, studios and release dates were read on Blu-ray.com on October 11, 2026.

Three things to know when reading it:

  • It is a selection. These are ten discs whose reviews we opened, not every animated 3D disc. Blu-ray.com also shows a 3D rating from its users on each disc's page, which can differ from the reviewer's.
  • Two scores are for bundle-only discs. How to Train Your Dragon's belongs to the 2010 pressing, which the review calls a "Samsung exclusive"; the 2011 release has no review on its page [9]. Bolt's page is headed "Exclusive with Sony HDTVs" [10].
  • Region. Blu-ray.com marks nine of the ten "Region free" and The LEGO Movie "Region A, B (C untested)" [2].

The table says what was released, not what a shop has today: we do not track stock or prices. Where 3D discs are sold now is in 3D Blu-ray in 2026. Looking for one title? Cars, Finding Nemo, Moana, Monsters, Inc., The Nightmare Before Christmas, Zootopia and the first two Toy Story films are in our 3D Blu-ray lookup.

Where you can watch animated films in 3D at home

From a 3D Blu-ray. All ten films above came out on one. The disc needs a player and a screen that both support 3D, and glasses: see what you need to play a 3D Blu-ray.

On an Apple Vision Pro. Two services have said they offer 3D films on this headset:

  • Disney+. Disney said in January 2024 that subscribers would be able to watch "dozens of popular movies in 3D" on Disney+ with Apple Vision Pro, and named Elemental and Encanto among them [14].
  • The Apple TV app. Apple's guide for the headset says "You can also buy and rent 3D movies in the Apple TV app", and that "Previously purchased movies that are now available in 3D can be viewed in 3D for free" [11]. Apple's list of featured 3D movies included The Wild Robot when we opened it from outside the US on October 11, 2026 [12]. Apple's launch announcement of January 2024 named Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Super Mario Bros. Movie among the 3D movies [13].

On a TV or a Meta Quest, from a streaming service. That is a separate question, answered service by service in which streaming services have 3D movies.

What owners say about the 3D in these films

These are owners' own views. We have not compared the discs.

Disney and Pixar. In January 2024 a Blu-ray Forum member in the UK with "pretty much every 3D Disney Blu Ray released" and a newly set up 3D projector asked which to watch first, "in visually impressive order" [15]. In the replies:

  • Monsters University and Wreck-It Ralph. One member who has most of the discs: "Apart from Monsters University and Wreck-it Ralph I don't see anything that really stands out" [15].
  • Tangled: one for, one against. The same member: "I know a lot of people liked Tangled 3D but it didn't really blow me away". A second member: "Tangled has the best 3D" [15].
  • Pixar, against the reviewers. That second member also wrote: "Pixar's 3D is average to decent but always way overrated by website reviewers" [15].
  • Beauty and the Beast. A third member: "Of the three 2D animated conversions, Beauty and the Beast is the best" [15].

Not Disney. In a Facebook group for 3D Blu-ray collectors, two members in two threads named the same DreamWorks film. One wrote in 2024: "Madagascar 3 is probably the best animated 3D I've seen". The other, in 2026: "Madagascar 3 is easily one of the best!" [16]

The film you want has no 3D version

An animated film with no 3D version, if you can play it on a computer, from a disc in its drive, a video file or a streaming site in a browser, can still be watched in 3D on the Owl3D Shift, a 14-inch glasses-free 3D display used as a second monitor. Its Live 3D Screen feature converts the picture from 2D to 3D instantly, as the film plays, with no file to prepare. This is an AI conversion, not the studio's 3D version. The Shift needs a Windows PC with an NVIDIA RTX 30 series graphics card or newer, or a Mac with Apple Silicon, and it shows 3D to one viewer at a time: a desk screen, not a living-room one. For Netflix and other copy-protected streaming, it works in a browser with the browser's hardware acceleration turned off.

Frequently asked questions

Is the hand-drawn Beauty and the Beast really in 3D?

Yes, as a conversion of the 1991 film. It is the disc that Blu-ray.com's reviewer says "boasts the most complete and consistent 3D conversion", ahead of The Lion King 3D [5].

Do animated 3D movies pop out of the screen?

In these reviews, mostly they go for depth behind the screen. The Tangled review says it is "rare for something to protrude from the screen" [6], and the How to Train Your Dragon one is quoted in the table to the same effect [9]. Madagascar 3's review is the one quoted there for regular pop-out [8]. For films of every kind, see the best 3D movies.
